afternoon parades or time for rides during afternoon parades
what else do we miss if we leave the parks at 1pm and dont return till 5?

Depending on your time of year, perhaps some of the shows and/or entertainment. We found that to be especially true at World Showcase where it seemed that many of the entertainers had last performances on the early side (we went in late August). Our kids wanted to be sure to see the Chinese acrobats, the Japanese candy lady, the Living Statues and others, plus the various characters that hang out at WS. We were planning several Epcot evenings and were surprised that the times and days were limited for some of these things. If you don't care about the entertainment, then fine -- otherwise, be sure to investigate ahead of time so you're not disappointed.

Over tired children that can't stay up for night parades or shows.

Being in the park with tired crying children.

"Stress and screaming kids"

I totally agree....go to the hotel, take a nap and come back at night!

I saw 5 children drop their ice cream cones last trip (yes I counted) you know, the ice cream falls off the cone and then they start screaming. I don't know why but it stressed me out, and I felt bad for the parents!

You'll be stress-free, sun-burn free and you'll have a magical vacation! :wizard:

I feel bad for the kids. The parents deserve what they get. They are the ones calling the shots. :confused3

I guess your right, but sometimes it looks like the kids are calling the shots :rotfl:

It's Disney though, the kids should have fun :wave2:

Whatever you might miss will be made up for by the refreshed feeling you'll have after an afternoon break: time in the pool, a nap, or just kicking off the shoes and relaxing.

Oh, and ITA about the screaming kids, particularly at the MK. When folks show up at rope drop - or earlier, given EMH - by early afternoon many kids are just running on empty - 5 or 6 straight hours of "Disney Fun" is a lot to handle, for kids AND adults.
