We have stayed at the Carousel and loved it.... It is only marginally further away than GCH but a lot closer than DH which is a 10 or 12 minute walk...
You can use the new DH slide pool when staying at the GCH though you are heading into winter over there so it will be a bit chilly for swimming...
I would find the chopping and changing of rooms a real pain, plus you may have a problem getting suitcases through the Security Check at the hub when going back and forth.... So you may need a cab to transfer luggage... The walk from DH to Carousel is about 18 to 20 minutes without bags (also its through Downtown Disney which can be crowded).
Try to request the level 3 view suite now, it gives a good view of the park and fireworks. The level 4 suite is directly under the breakfast room so can be noisey in the early morning.
