What do people do with their DSLR on certain rides?

Hi all,

Everytime I go to WDW I really love taking pictures to remember the trip by. I'm the type of person that will stop and work to get that perfect shot I am looking for, find the trash can to stabilize my night picture, etc. I've always brought a superzoom P&S(Last trip was Canon S3 IS) and it works decently but leaves me wanting more in certain situations(night, fast action, low light, natural light). I will probably be buying a DSLR in the near future(probably the Canon 50D) and have I've seen backpacks that store the camera and could also handle odds and ends. My only question is what do people do on rides with these backpacks? I'm thinking rides like Space Mountain, Expedition everest, RnRc. The pouches in the front of these cars are sometimes big enough for a large bag but not a backpack. Will they let you set your bag aside or do you grab a locker first?

I place the backpack between my feet and being extra cautious I will put one foot thru one of the backpack straps.

Same here. While my backpack is not huge, it will hold the camera and up to four lenses/flash in the lower section and then general stuff in the top section. There are no rides that it will not go on. On SM it is best to have the front seat though.

I'm another person to wrap it around my foot. My hands are always in the air especially on the Tower of Terror. I once had it between my feet on RnRc and it slid out( I was the only one in the car,DW & DS were in car before me, and it's sliding across the bottom) that scared me more than any ride I've ever been on in my life.
I use the Tamrac Velocity Sling Pack 7 and it fits into most bins/cargo nets on rides. Holds camera, 2 lenses and accessories.

I usually keep my camera out on the rides- I keep it around my neck but across my body so on the coasters the camera is sitting by my hip- out of the way of the safety bar- I keep my hand on it so it doesn't get knocked around. It hasn't been a problem on any Disney coasters. On Kali Rapids I did put the Dslr in my backpack and put it in the waterproof compartment and kept my p&s out for pictures(with a plastic bag handy for splashes). The backpack, I do like others have mentioned- on the floor at my feet with my feet thru the straps. Works quite well. Zing makes these neat neoprene cases, pouches etc for cameras and lenses. I have one for my D80 that gives a little bit of bump protection and repels water. Its a mighty strange looking thing but it does the job:thumbsup2

I was wondering the same thing. The bag that I use for shooting is not large, but it would be too big to fit into the little net compartments.

After the disaster with my camera falling out of my camera bag and onto teh wood floor this weekend, the one thing that worries me is that my bag closes with just a flap and one of those little plastic things like you'd find on a dog's collar.

My bag is SO comfortable (it's worn messenger style), I love it for walking around for long periods of time and would hate to lose that...but I am thinking just for extra security, I might need something with a zipper on top that will keep everything from falling out again. It only the Shootsac had a zipper, I'd snatch it up in a second.

I don't go on THOSE rides... just the baby ones. Hehehehehee

For rides with enough light (Expedition Everest, Kali River Rapids, Tower of Terror), I keep my camera out and use it. I where a tight hand strap, so it isn't going anywhere. The challenge on the bumpier rides is taking pictures without knocking myself out.

For dark rides like RnR and SM, I usually just hold it on my lap but leave it off. Every now and then I'll take it out on RNR in the hopes that I can get a cool motion blur shot, but it never works out for me.

I place the backpack between my feet and being extra cautious I will put one foot thru one of the backpack straps.

I 2nd this. Additionally, on the wet rides (Spash Mtn, Kali River Rapids, etc.) I pull the built in rain cover up and over it.

I am just curious on what bag everyone is bringing to Disney with them?

I'm with Mark, I take pictures w/ my camera...nothing like getting home and still being on the rides!!!! But I do put a foot through the strap of the bag.

I take three camera bags to WDW.

The big huge heavy one holds all of the camera gear and my laptop. It stays in the room.

For the parks I take a medium size bag that can carry all my lenses and DSLR. This usually is only for AK.

The rest of the time the tiny bag goes with my 50mm/f1.4 maybe the 28mm/f2.8 or the 35-70mm/f2.8. I can take the two primes or the one zoom. The 50mm/F1.4 is a lens I should have bought years ago. I find I use it ALOT for family photos. These three lenses fit in a small SunDog holster bag. The camera strap hangs out of the bag and that is how the "bag" is carried. The bag really just protects the camera and the other prime lens. I put a ziplock bag in the bottom of the bag in case the equipment needs to be protected from water.

On rides I will put the bag in a pocket if the ride has one. And I keep the strap attached to an arm or a leg. :lmao:

This tiny bag is nice. I get to take the camera and its light enough to not be that big of a deal. Last trip I saw a couple of people with HUGE camera bags and gobs of equipment taking pictures in EPCOT just before WS. I just had my little 50mm or 28mm. :) I had to use my feet to help frame the shot. They had to use their back to hump the lenses to help frame the shot. ;)

That 50mm/f1.4 is getting most of my shots now a days. I am really lusting after a D700. The D700 with high ISO performance and the 50mm/f1.4 should be a real good combination for the kids basketball games. :cheer2: :lmao: :)

Just have to get the DW to approve the purchase. ::yes::

Later,
Dan

i haven't been to wdw with a dslr but with my slr i bought what is actually an older style video messenger case, longer and narrow,( couple yrs ago, walmart $15) it would easily fit my present body and a few lenses and the reason i like it is because of the shape husband could keep it on his shoulder and fit it in beside him and the side of the seat and it never moved once. probably a back pack would work the same as long as you could keep one shoulder strap on
