What do I need to know about buying a kitten?

We have discovered that Siamese cats do not bother our allergies. Strange but true. I've read that it's an unfounded myth that people say Siamese cats are hypo-allergenic (or whatever), but we've had our Siamese kitty for almost 7 years now, and we're FINE. But any other house with any other kinds of cats, and we're all sneezing and wheezing.

so anyway.

My DDs want another Siamese cat. The one we have now was a gift from my brother. I'm a firm believer in rescuing animals from shelters, but Siamese kittens are not usually found in shelters!

We've tried Petfinder.com, but most of them are too far away for us.

So we found one, about a 90 minute drive. And now we don't know what to do.

How do I know if this is a reliable seller? What's a reasonable price? What questions do I ask?

I"m totally clueless!

Funny, I have read the opposite, that siamese cats are one of the MOST allergenic. The one I got sure did set off allergies I never even knew I had. Of course, she is not a pure bred, so maybe that is why. I just take my claritin and flonase and I am fine. I think we just get used to our cats' dander and a newer one will set us off.

BTW, Bengals are great for allergies, because they have more of a pelt than fur. And boy are they fun!

I don't know much about buying a cat. Just make sure to have the cat checked out thoroughly by the vet before letting it mingle with your current one. The last cats I adopted brought in calicivirus and all my cats got sick, one really bad. Also make sure your current cat is totally up to date on its vaccines. Even if they are vaccinated, new cats can carry viruses like calicivirus and feline herpes on their fur.

I'm allergic to some cats and not to others. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to me.

As for whether this person is a reliable seller? I don't know. Are you trying to get papers? Are you planning to breed the cat later as a full Siamese cat?

I got my kitty from a shelter. I paid $80 for her. Part of it was for an involunary "donation" and the rest covered the fee for having her spayed.

In the end, if you don't care whether this cat is a pure breed, but only want one that is hypoallergenic to your DD, and this is the one, then pay whatever the cat is worth to you.

Check www.siameserescue.org I have adopted a few cats from them.

I got Toby (the Lynx) and Ashley (the Snowshoe) in January from them. They are a bonded pair and Siamese Rescue would only allow them to be adopted as a pair. My previous cats were an 18½ year old Ocicat who had stomach cancer and a 14 year old lilac point Siamese who had a bleeding cyst in one kidney for several years. They died within three months of each other.

OMG! That's Ching & Sushi! As I scrolled down, I thought you had a pic of my childhood cats! Lol!

Ching was a seal point and Sushi was the lynx.

Maybe so. The allergy doctor I went to also said it was the individual cat's dander that people are allergic to, not the hair. It is the dust that is created when the cat's saliva dries on the fur. So, some of us are allergic to our cat's SPIT, LOL
