what do I NEED to know about a Nikon D60?

We just bought one. We have always had a point and shoot, but wanted to upgrade to a dSLR. The camera is actually for my father, we just took a photography class together. So we know a tiny bit, but not enough to take good pictures. I have already told my mom that the key to this gift is going to make him take the camera everywhere he goes. But we would really appreciate any advice you can share. Thank you all so much.

Seriously, which lens came with the camera? What do you and your father want to take pictures of and under what conditions. Of course being a Nikon owner, you made a great decision. Just watch out for NAS!

As you are learning/reading, you can use auto or 'P' and the D60 will be just like a p&s only better. In 'auto' the flash will pop up on its own when needed- in 'P' it won't- you control the flash.

If your Dad liked photography in the past, or is kicking around the idea of doing it as a hobby, this is a good camera to start with. I repeat what the other pp's have said. Read the manual. Practice with the camera. There is a book out there that is highly recommended on this board called Understanding Exposure that will come in handy when your Dad wants to learn more.

The D60 is really easy to use, and has some nice features to it that makes photography fun. Of course the more you read, study, and practice the easier and more satisfying the experience can be. The real money pit is in getting the right lenses. The D60 has no motor in it's body, so you have to get the higher end lenses.
