We bought a house recently and now spring is upon us so we are realizing all the things we will need for outside. So far our list includes:

hoses (are some better than others?)
lawnmower
rake
spreader
grass seed

what am I forgetting?

our list included:

Sprinkler system
Lawn service

I don't think I'm much help ;)

A pointed shovel, a straight edged shovel, a sprayer, ladder, and pruners. That's all I can think of right now. Congrats on the new house! :D

I also recommend an edger and clippers. You might also want some gloves and fertilizer, plant food and weed killer if you plan to really get into gardening. Oh, and a sprinkler for the grass if you have dry periods.

How about garden tools? A lawn edger, pruning shears for bushes, plants etc. I am not sure about the hose, we have had the same hose for 10 years and was not an expensive one. The hose caddy though is in need of replacement.

Oooh I can't wait to get started! Where oh where is the warm weather!

These are the tools in my garage. Please note that I have 1.5 acres of grass/weeds/wild onions, which I refuse to fertilize, due to the cost. When the weeds/onions are mowed short, the yard looks great!

Wheelbarrow
Riding Mower
Push Mower
Trimmer
Blower
Firm Rake
Flexible Rake
Ax
Pointed Shovel
Straight Shovel
Electric Cippers
Hand Clippers
Thatching Rake
Mattock (sp?)
Chain Saw
Hand Saw for Small Limbs
Pitch Fork
Air Compressor
Tool Chest, with hand tools
Sprayer
Various Garden Tools
6ft Ladder
Extension Ladder
Goggles/Safety Glasses
Mask (similiar to a gas mask) so I don't breath the dirt/grass
Gas Container for Mowers
Gas Container for Trimmer

All that, and lawn bags!

Oh and spray hornet nest killer.

yard furniture so you can sit and enjoy your yard after doing all that work

Those big brooms, the kind janitors use....for sweeping the driveway.

Unless the lawn looks really bad, I wouldn't go with grass seed, but fertilizer with a good weed stop. Judge the lawn this fall as to wether you should seed later.

when should we fertilize? I don't know why, but I thought it was something you did in the fall.

Some people fertilize in the EARLY spring to promote good growth and get a start on weed control. Most discount chains will have the one you need. Scotts is a great brand. Please be careful if you have pets or children though. They probably need to stay off the lawn until a good rain soaks the product in the ground. (The bag will have directions). :D

We used to burn our lawn when we used the Scott's 3 or 4 step plan, so we switched to ChemLawn. They were at our house yesterday with a fertilizer that will wake up the dormant grass. They come about once a month throughout the spring, summer and most of the fall. We have the nicest yard in the neighborhood. Not one speck of crab grass or dandelions.

My recommendation for outdoor tools is a really good gas grill that can be setup right to your house's gas line or propane tank. That way, you never have to worry about running out of propane from the 10 lb. tank that is attached to it. We have a Broil Master that still ignites after 9 years on the first or second try.
