What do I bring for the 1st day on board?

The backpack on wheels sounds like a good idea. If the kids didn't already have regular backpacks I would buy them.:

My sister & I used our rolling carry-on's They were GREAT! Fit everything in it with no trouble. Including some bottled H20. Had no trouble at the buffet, they stand up on there own, and when you move down you could pull them down, but we actually got a seat first and 1 at a time, got our food, worked out easier, leaving them parked next to the table at the empty seat area.

I used to use a rolling back pack for my carry -on but needed a new one, and bought a new set this year, the room difference is twice the size as the rolling back pack I had. I 1st had the "disney" store version with mickey on the rolling BP, then moved to a large BP rolling model BUT a regular size carry on (airline size, approved) is still much bigger.
If you don't need the room, it is convient to "flip" them and be able to throw it on your back. Take a tape measure with you when checking luggage, we did and it was really eye opening. Also have your airline approved size limits.
