You can have as many characters as you can afford! I've heard of receptions where they had something like 12 characters. Also, you get a tiny bit of a break on the price as the numbers increase.

Thank you for the information. Wow, 12 characters is a lot. I was thinking of even 4 seeming like a lot, but it would make great pictures and memories, and even more so for the kids who may not get to visit the parks during their stay. This is making me think of ideas for my kids favors. May just have to tie in the characters if there's enough time.
