What did I do wrong? iron/transer disaster

So I printed out my first transfer yesterday and it looked very good. It was bright and the colors vivid. I had already washed all the tees.

Today I turned the iron on (per the directions, to the highest cotton setting). I made sure the tee was extra flat. I peeled the backing and placed on the tee. Now, here is where i started to get confused. Cause to make the design come out right (so the names weren't backwards) I had to put it sticky side up??? I would have thought sticky side down. Well as soon as I started to iron it stuck to the iron. Maybe I should mention that I am not the most domestic person you'll ever meet and when my dear fiancee sees the iron (he irons ALL of our clothes, cause I can't be trusted) he is going to have a cow! :scared1:

So what did I do wrong and how can I fix it. Thankfully the tee doesn't have any damage but I have a lot of shirts I would like to do for our upcoming honeymoon. =D

Thanks!
Jes

Well I think I figured it out...I forgot to cover it with the overlay paper that is included. So much for reading the directions well enough. :rotfl2:

Yes, that is it, but also, if you are using the dark transfer paper, you don't reverse the image when you print it. You want the part that you peeled the backing from next to the shirt.

Are you using the transfers for dark tshirts or white? Does your printer automatically reverse the design for printing? The reason I ask is because the dark transfers you don't want to reverse the design, if that makes sense at all. I think you may want to check on the printing because I'm pretty sure it is sticky side down.

I agree with the pp - it all depends on the transfer paper you are using it sounds to me like you are using dar so regardless the shiny sticky side that is all white is what would go down on the shirt with the other side facing up.

I found out the hard way that if I pick tshrit transfer as the paper type I am using that my program automatically flips its which you don't need on the dark transfer paper so I wasted one there.

I also did one and the parts that were to be black came out more purple??? any ideas on how to fix that one? I had pretty brand new ink cartrides in there so not sure. I think I am going to try some shiny black shirt paint (that puffy stuff) and go over it with a very small paintbrush to see if I can fix.

It is the tires on lightning mcqueen so they look pretty dorky puprlish in color.
