I know- weird question.

We are having our family room painted next week. The walls will be sherwin williams bagel. The woodwork will be painted dove white. The decorator/painter wants the ceiling to be painted Sherwin Williams Biscuit (61112) which is 2 steps lighter than the bagel. Our ceilings are textured. All other ceilings in our house are white. The family room is adjacent to the kitchen but it is a step down. The kitchen ceiling is white too. Will it look odd to have 1 ceiling that isn't white?

What color are your ceilings painted?

Currently they are all white. I did have one ceiling that was blue with white clouds, but the walls were also blue with white clouds and it just carried up and over. I loved it but I just painted over it because the walls were really really in need of a refurbish and the blue ceiling didn't go with the new color.

Every room in our house EXCEPT DD's have white ceilings. My intention was to keep hers white, but I was tired, over-caffinated and couldn't keep my line straight, so I painted it.

I think you need to look at the size of your room to be the determinate. Keeping a white ceiling makes the room look bigger. If that's your goal, keep it white. If the room is big enough, and the color is light enough, paint it the bagel shade.

P.S. - I have a very small house (<1100 sq. ft.) I need all the illusion of height I can muster!

I don't like white ceilings. I just looked at your color scheme and I love the biscuit ceiling with the bagel walls. I would listen to your decorator :thumbsup2

(some of my rooms are Benjamin Moore Sherwood Tan on the walls with Sea Urchin on the ceilings - so warm!)

All of our ceilings are painted something other than white, except in a couple rooms where a white ceiling goes with the color scheme. Our main level is painted "Stone House" by Benjamin Moore. It is a very light tan color-about 2 down the strip from the wall color (it is actually on a different strip but same difference). Our walls are "Scarecrow" from BM. I LOVE how it finishes off a room. If your room is all warm colors and you have this bright, white ceiling, it kind of kills the effect of your decor, I think.

our ceilings are various colours but the trim throughout the house is white - so there is continuity from room to room. The decorator's rule is to mix the wall colour half and half with white, although most contractors go with white throughout.

In your case, you could go with either. But it's only paint - it's inexpensive to change the colour. You should try the decorator's suggestion because you can always just paint over it. It won't look odd necessarily - it will probably make the family room look more separate from the kitchen. But if you're one of those people who thinks ceilings should never be painted anything other than white, this is going to be way outside your comfort zone.

I really dislike stark white ceilings. All of my ceilings are either cream or a lighter shade of the wall color.

Kitchen, bedrooms and bath - white

Dining room - moss green walls, tan ceiling, white crown molding.

Living room - dark tan walls, same tan ceiling, white crown molding.

I LOVE the living room and dining room ceilings. It feels so much warmer than with just white ceilings.

In the main room the ceiling is a light brown/ tan color with the side walls a whitish blue. I like it. Just moved into the house and wasn't sure the colors would work well with the furniture, but the scheme works well for the place.

In my current house all the ceilings are white. As are the walls (though not a white-white). In my old house, our living room had a blue ceiling. I loved it.

our walls are a taupe and our ceilings are eggshell. I really like it a lot.

Our walls are "botany beige" and our ceilings are 2 shades lighter, doors and trim are antique white. All of the house is done in this same color.

Most of our walls are a dark beige and the ceilings are the same... with the exception of our bedroom...more of a milk chocolate color with dark beige ceiling... red dining room, with dark beige ceiling...orange powder room, with dark beige ceiling.

All our ceilings are white. It makes it much easier to change up a room when only the walls need to be painted.

When I repainted my entire first floor, I did not go with white ceilings, I went with an off white cream color. My house is a craftsman style, its not very formal, so I thought the warmer color was the best choice. In the future, I would be even more daring with my ceiling colors.

  • White in the Living, Dining and Family Room & Kitchen.
  • Dark Navy Night Sky Blue in the vaulted ceiling in the Morning Room.
  • Deep Brick Red in our Tray ceiling in our Bedroom
  • and our DD's room has a Grape Purple ceiling that comes down one foot onto the walls, and then another two feet under that is lavender and the rest of the wall is green.:3dglasses
