So what is a trimester? That sounds interesting.

Pre-AP Geometry all year - they count 2nd semester as an elective - yeah, right....

Choir - all year - 2 more electives

Pre AP Science (1st sem)
Pathfinder (2nd Semester) - a required course here

DS17 is a SR in a virtual school -
He is finishing Chemistry, then has Physics, Pre-Calc, English 4 & Music Appreciation and he has his diploma in hand. Hoping to be done right after Christmas so he can work full time & save to pay for college.

ETI II (elementary teaching internship) this is a two period class. 3 days a week she will actually be interning with an elementary teacher. Upon graduation she will be handed a contract with our school district. Then when she completes college and become a certified teacher she will always have a job with our school district. Even if all they have available is a sub position..she gets full teacher pay and benefits. Ya can't beat that!

That is so cool!!!!
I guess she knows her career path.

Our Freshman has modified block Monday all of her classes and 4 T/TH, 4 W/F

the way it works out she gets out before 1 on T/Th.....awesome schedule for a frosh

period 0----athletics
period 1----Spanish 1 (took it in middle school, but teacher wasn't great)
period 2----World Geography
period 3-----Intergrated Science 1 (no idea what it is )
period 4----Advanced Language Arts
period 5---symphonic band
period 6---marching band
period 7----open
period 8---IMP II Honors (math class....guessing Advance Algerbra 1)

These are all classes leading up to IB....if she decides to go that route

A trimester is where the school year is broken into 3 marking periods instead of 2/4, semesters/quarters. They are 12 weeks long vs 8 weeks of a quarter or 16 weeks of a semester.

The way our block works is:
The first day of the quarter has classes 1, 2 & 3, the next day is class 4, 5 & 6 these classes are almost 2 hours long with a 1/2 hr break between classes. This repeats daily with a slight variation on Thursdays & Fridays when classes are slightly shorter and all kids have an "academic support" class which is to be used for seeking out help from teachers, visits to their counselors etc.....

The schedule starts over the beginning of each quarter, sometimes it starts with the 1,2 & 3 and then others the 4, 5 & 6 depending on how the number of days work in the quarter.

When my son was in Middle school, they had blocks that rotated daily: day 1: 1,2,3 then day 2: 4,5,6 then day 3: 7,1,2 then day 4: 3,4,5 etc.... it wasn't as confusing as it seems.

I also see where some kids are taking AP classes as early as Freshman year. What did they take in middle school to qualify for AP classes in ninth grade?

At my daughter's high school, AP classes can only be taken as a Junior or Senior. Honors can be taken at all levels.

They continue to take AP classes. I had AP classes all 4 years, as will my youngest... It is probably the same thing as your honors classes, just a differnet nomenclature.

What I mean is, if a student takes AP English as a Freshman, what would he/she take for English the following three years? Here, AP classes are the highest level a student can take, and they equate to first year college level classes.

I can see how Honors classes progress each year, because they prepare the student for AP classes. I just never thought of AP classes as being the same as Honors classes. Maybe in some school districts they aren't the same as first year college level?

In our area, AP classes are the top classes availible for the student, the toughest ones. They are a sequence that runs for 4 years in English and History. As a senior you can take the AP test and get college credit for a passing grade. But the earlier years are set up as just more chalanging for the students. They prepare you much better for the SAT's etc as well.

Hi Luvflorida,

I haven't heard of anyone taking the AP English exam in grade 9, which is not to say that it isn't done, but I would think it's quite rare. My high school set it up such that the bright freshman took the "easier" APs, the ones that only required one year of prep, in 9th/10th grade (think human geography, environmental science, statistics, European history, biology) and the "harder" APs, the ones where you need to spend significant time in preparation, in 11th/12th grade (think Calculus BC, Physics C, Chemistry, English Language, CS AB, Latin). I took the AP English exam in 11th grade, and Philosophy in 12th grade.

I could see a district placing a 9th grader in an AP English exam only under circumstances where they think the kid will graduate early. There's a major advantage to having the kid hold off ... if they're that bright, they should spend a couple of years preparing and get a higher score.
