At Thanksgiving and Christmas, we also donate food to a local women's shelter

ITA, Galahad - my former employer was a HUGE United Way pusher (one of the big muckety mucks was on the Board of Directors of United Way). During each year's campaign, they kept track of who donated and in what amount. If you weren't on the donor list, high-level executives would come to your desk to try to coerce you to donate. I refused to give in and, as a result, had to put up with alot of snide comments during the campaigns.

I give from my heart to organizations I believe in - not because someone else tells me to give.

The ones closest to my heart are World Vision, African Inland Church (which supports AIDS orphanages, schools, etc in the poorest areas of Africa), and Empowering Lives International (which teaches Africans to support themselves using readily available materials, like turning an abdanoned oil drum into a bread oven and selling bread to support your family... they are actually incredibly effective at creating solid economic improvment in many communities).

Mainly the Jimmy Fund. For many years, my DH was very active in their fund raising efforts. During that time he did the 26-mile walk to raise money for the Jimmy Fund for 10 years in a row. Recently, my DD and other family members have done the walk. For those that are not familiar, the Jimmy Fund is affiliated with the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and is committed to finding a cure for childhood and adult cancers. It is also the favorite charity of the Boston Red Sox.
