While it seemed like much of society was obsessed with the lives of the rich and famous through reality TV during the early 2010s it also seemed like there was much interest for reality TV covering the people of the rural "Heartland".

I feel it was due to the fact that society encouraged to be vapid and dumbed down in the 2000s and early 2010s. Extreme ends are enthralling.

Maybe because it's so outrageous...far from the real world. Makes one appreciate a "normal" life a bit more. JMO
