Hi There!

I have to buy some Easter Candy for my DD's class. There is a peanut allergy in the classroom. What candy would be safe? I'm just scared off all the chocolates (Hershey, Reese's, etc...) since they make Peanut kinds too.

Any advice? :confused3

Thanks in advance!

Karen

I'd think anything that was purely sugar (Necco wafers, Peeps, marshmellow eggs with the candy coating on the outside) would be safe. But check the label just in case.

Probably "gummy"-type candy like Life Savers Gummies, or candy like Starburst or Skittles. Usually, there are warnings on the back if it is possible there was a cross-contamination with a peanut product. If you don't see the warning, you can pretty much assume you are safe, because the companies put the warning on the bag if it is necessary - if not only to save their own butts.

This was a tough situation for me last week, especially because everything had to also be prewrapped, because you can't just give our sweet tarts or jelly beans.

I ended up buying some candy at Card/Party Outlet for DD birthday goodie bags. It was a bunch of candy mix - smarties, etc. Kinda like what you would get for Halloween - well, after I used it in the goodie bags, I gave the rest to her class for their project. Teachers thought it was perfect! :thumbsup2

Read the labels. Some foods, even though they don't contain peanuts, are made at a plant that processes other foods that do.

Do you have the phone number for the peanut-allergic kid's mom? I bet she could give some suggestions.

I had to bring a snack for French Club one week, and I called the principal to ask what would be a good snack. She said she always has alternative snacks available for peanut-allergic kids, and suggested goldfish crackers or fig newtons. I brought cheeze-its.

Please be careful. To be honest. as the parent of a PA child, I wouldn't let her eat anything that someone else had brought in unless I could check all labels first. To that end, Hershey Kisses and plain Hershey bars are safe. Also, new Hershey Kissables are safe- they are just like M&Ms, which are not. Some jelly beans are safe, some are not. Check all labels.

I order chocolate from the Vermont Nut FreeCompany. I know for sure that everything from there is safe.

Also check your schools policy with these. I know with our policy, everything has to be individually wrapped.

Another thing if you need a bigger snack that the "peanut allergy mom" said was always safe was the individually wrapped Hostess Cupcakes.

I sent in chocolate carrots for the class but since they are made in a place that has peanuts (label doesnt say it but I work there so I know there are peanuts there) I sent in a bag of jelly beans shaped like a carrot for the peanut allergy kid. They take it home and don't eat it at school anyway...

Our boy in class can have Kissables, with a peanut and dairy allergy.

BUT I would ask the mom first.

My DN has a severe peanut allergy. I usually buy the combo bag with gum, smarties, jaw breakers, etc. I always check the bag! I think kissables are a great idea b/c they are individually packed so the parent can check the bag.

Be careful to always read the bag b/c even gummy candy is often not safe.
