...that faces east/south-east and doesn't drain well? After rain, that bed can be soggy for several days, so I don't want to plant anything that won't do well there.

Any suggestions? I'm in zone 9.

I'm trying the iris and frecia (sp?) bulbs in the southeast facing bed that *does* drain, as well as putting some pansies there for now.

Rajah... how much sun does it get? Full for X hours? or filtered for X hours? That would help in thinking about this.

rajah...ferns come to mind...they like it moist.

Next I think I would try and raise the soil level...by bringing in some soil or even tilling in a bunch of sand which will hopefully help drain the area.

Elephant ears might do well there. I planted some in a soggy spot and they went crazy.

I was wondering the same thing Amid mentioned, Rajah. Can you build up the area, perhaps a raised bed?

:)

Unfortunately, building up the bed would put the foundation of our garage at risk, so we were told not to build it up. :(

I'm still trying to figure out what exactly the light is there. Morning it gets full, afternoon half of it gets full and half gets shade, I think.

Would wave petunias be worth a try?
