Hi all...I have a bit of a problem that I would appreciate help with....

Back in February I contacted a woman about renting her home in Davenport for our trip in November....I sent the 200.00 deposit along with a signed rental agreement back to her to lock the dates and had emailed her back and forth for a while and she was very helpful in answering all the questions I had asked...Well back in June, I had to cancel...her home was only a 4 bdrm and we needed a bigger home...After emailing her a few times she finally sent back a reply thanking me for looking at her home and she was very sorry I had to cancel...she asked me what I preferred...a cheque of money order...I asked for a money order...well that was JUly 12 and I have yet to receive anything...I have just sent her another email requesting it again...now my question is...what can I do???? I mean is there anyone I can contact to help me out...she is obligated to give it back right...that's what it said in the rental agreement....

Help,

Kelley

It could just be that she's a little slow in getting it in the mail...and mail does take longer from the States....hopefully you'll hear something from her and maybe it'll be in your mailbox tomorrow! :)

You did keep a copy of the rental agreement right? As the last poster said, mail does take longer from the states so I wouldn't get too irate yet. Do you have a copy of the cancelled cheque or money order as evidence in case you need to prove you paid her? I would give it a couple more weeks then I would contact the davenport local BBB for help as to your options. Best of luck!!!!! I hope that it is just slow mail for you. Keep us updated.

I just received mail from Disney that took 27 days to get here so maybe just be patient for a little while. The mail takes a really, really long time. :)

Thanks all...Yes I do have a copy of the rental agreement and the money order as well as all the emails including the one where she said she had received the money order...I will wait a little longer I guess...

Thank you,

Kelley

Things can be painfully slow by mail sometimes...
Try not to panic yet :thumbsup2

I'm actually surprised that she said she'd return your deposit. Does your rental agreement say that the deposit can be returned if you cancel? Her house was off the market for 4 or 5 months until you cancelled your agreement. I would have been royally annoyed if somebody had done that to me...and I would have had it as a non-refundable deposit if it had been my agreement to compensate for the fact that she may not be able to rent it out again.

Now...that notwithstanding, she did say she'd return your money so she agreed to that which, in my opinion, is actually rather kind of her. July 12 for a letter does seem rather long in my opinion. I've had a letter from the States take 2 weeks not a month. But then, you're assuming that she went out right away to buy your money order. She may have waited a week or two to do so and that would add some time to the delivery.

I hope you get your money back soon.. I think you are very lucky to be getting your deposit back....
Please don't take this in a negative way... I do not mean it to be rude or curt....okay.. :grouphug:

Not sure about laws in other states, but in MA if you sign a contract and you cancel they can keep your deposit.. I would think the contract stated the number of bedrooms it had???

Hope you get it soon....

I knew her home had 4 bedrooms and at the time that was ok for us...I also understand that her home was off the market for those months that I had booked but it did say in her contract that a refund would be given..in fact every rental agreement that I have read has stated that the money is refunded as long as the cancellation is made within 60 days...I would never rent from some one who didn't offer a refund...because things do come up...

Anyway, she did get back to me about an hour ago and told me she was sorry I hadn't received it yet but she did mail it...she expects that I should get it this week...So I guess I just have to wait...I didn't realize the postal service was so slow..when I sent my money orders it only took a week..... :confused3

Thanks,

Kelley
