I'm 40 in October and I'd like to mark the occasion in some modest way. Dh and I don't usually 'do' birthdays but this one is a bit of a milestone, so... Our budget is mega-tight (as usual) at about £150 but I know some of you are as thrifty as I am, so can you think of anything? :)

i dont do birthdays either, just feel uncomfortable about the attention.

go see a theatre show and a nice meal?

£150 might just get a weekend in paris (at a real stretch)

I felt I wanted to mark my 40th too but as money was really tight back then I ended up choosing a rose arbour seat for the garden and planted roses either side. Nearly ten years on it's still there (albeit rather weathered now) and I still spend many an afternoon sat out there in the sunshine inbetween deheading the roses and battling the greenfly. :rotfl2:

Next year is my 50th :scared1: and as finances are a bit healthier now I am being treated to the Wizard of Oz then dinner at Inventions at Disneyland Paris on my actual birthday.

Wish I was only going to be 40 again :rotfl: hope you get some great suggestions. :goodvibes

I thought about dipping into the WDW fund to go to DLP, but that seemed wrong.:rotfl:

I have such a clear image of you on your arbour seat, Elaine.:rotfl: I like the sound of your 50th - that would be lovely!

What about a trip to London to see the Lion King, then your getting a bit of Disney?

There are plenty of train and travelodge offer around :thumbsup2

Lastminute.com have theatre tickets on offer as well :)

Lol, I had actually looked at that! I would feel guilty not taking the eldest 2 kids though. :confused3

I just want to say, 'I did.............for my 40th.' It doesn't have to be amazing - just something that I wouldn't be doing on any other Wednesday in October.

I understand totally. My DH wanted a Disney cruise for his 50th and was quite happy to wait 10 months for it, although we did go for a meal on his birthday. I, on the other hand, feel the need to do something special on the actual day ....... not days, weeks, or months later.

Would you feel guilty about not taking the children to any show or only for the Lion King? Perhaps go for a more adult-themed show that they wouldn't be interested in?

Anything that was child-friendly I would feel guilty about!:rotfl: The Lion King would be something I'd like to see as a family. I've thought about an overnight stay at a theme park - that way we could all celebrate. I would have to take the kids out of school for a day though....

How about a nice meal out? Just you and your husband?

I might see if I can persuade him to book the day off so that we can spend some quality time together. I like the idea of a leisurely meal sans kids.;)

bit corny but how about a hot air ballon flight, bungee or a trip in a racing car?
the experience packages are v nice.
or a family potrait?
happy birthday in advance:goodvibes

I have just mentioned to Dh the idea of him booking the day off for my birthday. He told me he'd already done that! I suggested a meal or day out somewhere and he told me to stop 'digging' and not to book/plan anything. I dug a little bit more and he told me that he'd sorted something for my birthday ages ago.

At this point, I should be pleased, I know. BUT he has never really 'surprised' me in 21 years and he's not big on planning...:scared1: Oh gawd, what will it be? He did say ages ago that he'd planned something for my birthday, but I thought he was joking.:rotfl: Like I said, we don't 'do' birthdays, and if we did, I would be the one planning it!:rotfl: I am a control freak.

Awww! That is so cute! I hope you have a good time! :goodvibes

What a good hubby.

Its my 30th this year and I keep discussing it with DH as i'm such a control freak and can't just let him sort it.

Just like me. I would have been happy to organise my own birthday. :lmao:

I was going to suggest something like Tea at the Ritz, but it seems your DH has got it all sorted..... :rotfl:

I know what you mean about needing to know what they've sorted - my DH is just the same..... couldn't trust him to organise dinner most nights :rotfl2:

My DH thinks most things happen in our house by 'magic'. He has no input into most things, which is why I'm nervous!:rotfl:

I know a couple of B&Bs in Blackpool that are about £25 a night....throw in there a tram ride down the prom, cause they illuminations should still be on followed by fish and chips......:lmao:

Im sure you could do a a night in London for £125, if you book it early enough with trains and hotel, would be a push but we managed to get train tickets from Blackpool-Euston for £12.50 each way!

The one and only time DH surprised me was in 1990 when he booked us a weekend in Blackpool at a B&B. I'm not joking!:rotfl: I had to drive and we both wore shellsuits. We were proper 'old skool'.:rotfl:
