What camera to take??

I didn't take my dslr last year and really regretted it. There's just no comparison. I like to mount the 50mm/f1.4 for walk around purposes. It's light, a respectable lenses, and performs well on dark rides. I take a couple other lenses and leave them in the room and stick the point and shoot in my backpack.

I took my DSLR on our first trip, a point and shoot for our second, and just my phone on our third. Planning our fourth trip for October and I don't see myself taking anything more than my phone again.

I purchase the PhotoPass so we have a few photos and I don't have to lug around a camera. But, for me, I'm not there to take photos - I'm there for the experience! I'm OK with fab memories and a few photos.

This is my first time posting on this board.

Sorry to intrude on AndreAggie's post, but I was hoping to piggy-back with a related question... has anyone here taken their dSLR and regretted it?

I'm heading for my 6th Disneyland trip, and have previously only taken a range of P&S cameras as well as my iPhone. I'm thinking for the first time of taking my 5D Mark III with me, but I'm worrying about whether I might find myself regretting lugging the thing around? I know I can always leave it at the hotel, but I'm just curious as to people's experience with carrying theirs on rides, perhaps getting too caught up in the photography and not enjoying the trip itself? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

(Sorry again to jump in like this -- wasn't sure whether this would be better or worse than starting a somewhat redundant thread.)

Nope... couldn't say I ever regretted having a great body with a great lens along with me. Quite the contrary.

I have the 5d mk 2 with a 24-105mm L, it's awesome to have it with me, I'd like to think I got a lot of good shots during my last trip in 2012. A lot of the photopass photographers loved to use it more than the Nikons they are supplied.

It did get a little heavy at the end of the day though.

That's kind of funny to me actually. I've never noticed exactly what sort of set-up they use, but knew it was Nikon.

Hearing people's comments, I'm getting very tempted to bring mine with me now...

I just ordered an extra long camera strap, so I can wear my DLSR cross-body instead of around my neck. I'll probably take it the first day and then make my decision from there.

I think that is a good plan. Keep in mind that if you find it too much of a bother, you can rent a locker and put it in there part of the day.

I saw a lot of people recommend taking the DSLR. I have a good setup so I will as well. However, I think the key is that you said "you're getting used to". I think it's only worthwhile if you are comfortable with it and know you can get good image quality. Practice as much as possible before going to get that comfort with both bright outdoor and dark indoor (no flash) or situations where you'd use your flash.

I have my iphone, two digital cameras (one with better zoom than the other) and a video camera that's more than a little tempermental about working when I need it to but that's what I usually use and then photopass.

Now to decide what stroller to take! Seriously, there are entirely too many decisions to make for a type A to go on vacation!

I would recommend a sling bag, you can stow the camera quickly or take it out quickly to take a shot. You will notice the camera a lot less this way than having it swing around on a strap.

We were just there last month and I took my DSLR the first day and that was the last day. We have a new PnS with zoom and used that the 4 remaining days. I just did not like lugging it around and my DD's did not like getting bonked on the head when I bent over to wipe their hands or something We were very happy with the quality of the photos and loved the fact that I could just put it in my pocket.

I ALWAYS carry my phone AND a really good point & shoot. Seriously, every waking hour they're both in my pocket. I'll grab my phone and take pics with it sometimes because those pics are so easy to share. If I want to take a shot to keep, though, it's the point & shoot all the way.

I also have a DSLR and took it with me on my most recent trip to Disneyland. It was great to have. Got some lovely photos. But I only brought it in to the parks two out of eight days. I just didn't want to deal with it other times. I think of my DSLR as a "portrait camera".

For me, that was the perfect compromise. Will do the same on future trips.

That said, if I had a stroller, I'd likely bring it more often.

Im at this issue right now - we arent going for a few months, plus we are driving anyways so I know that all my camera gear is coming with me.
I shoot DSLR and hate not using it, that being said I dont want to get caught up and not have fun because I am trying to get pictures. I am currently looking into a nice P&S camera that will be part of my wifes b-day, and part of getting a nice small camera for our trip - the Canon S110 is the one I think i might get - has some DSLR type features, wifi to share pics easy, and is nice and small plus a touch screen.
I think that I will take my DSLR for the special days, like when our daughter is getting a makeover and try to bring it if its not too cumbersome.
I did just get a nice small 40mm lens specifically for this trip......That and my GoPro Hero3 Black will be in my pocket the entire trip.....love those things.

I've never found a DSLR to be a burdon on the trip. You'd hate to miss a great shot because you were fumbling with a P&S with horrible FPS.

I have a Canon Power Shot XS510. Its considered a mini bridge camera. I wasn't quite ready for a DSLR, so this is what was recommended for me. Its a great camera and took some wonderful shots at Disneyland. I am a total novice and found it easy to use and to get quality shots. Also easy to carry around at the parks! I have a good friend who is a professional photographer and she was looking at my camera and thought it was a great point and shoot (if that helps any!).

I bring my DSLR and DH brings his P&S (but he doesn't take many photos but it is handier for things like quicker close-ups or food shots when I don't want to pull out my gear).

But right now I'm just trying to convince him that I NEED a new lens. One that covers a wider range (either the 40-150 or 18-180mm) as then I would be OK with just the one lens for the trip-OK and some filters for sunshine and not have to change my lenses all the time. He doesn't shoot and doesn't get my NEED. He just sees my 5 lenses that I do have and shakes his head.

I alternated between my 5D and a S100 last trip. S100 was a fantastic little camera, buuuuut I am looking at the RX-100 for the next trip.

Yea RX-100 is just too much cash for now.

I think im gonna take my 7D w/40mm 2.8 - toss my hero3 black in my pocket for video and then have my wife carry the S110 (or whatever P&S we grab)

Im taking all my lenses and gear but the 40 is just sooo light and small it will be good for DL

I have a GoPro Hero2 and think its pretty fun. The fisheye makes it a little hard for some shots.

What type of video do you take with the GoPro black?

This is always something I have to think about as well. We usually go for 4 days. I also just bought DD a nice durable P&S with full intent on it being our main camera for most days. I usually take my DSLR one day and plan to have an eye on photos day. For instance the day we will be celebrating DDs birthday. But it's nice to have the freedom to not worry about photos too. I've had good look with Photopass as well.

I should add when I do have the DSLR I keep it in an awesome backpack camera bag. The backpack also holds everybody's "stuff."

The big exception is water rides. Someone has to stay with the camera. But we can easily plan no water rides on a day I have the DSLR.

I've never been disappointed in the pictures we end up with.
