I just bought a new point and shoot that takes pretty reasonable pictures but by our trip next year I plan to have a digital SLR (Nikon D80 if I get lucky LOL!)

The difference in weight and the amount of space they take up can't even be compared (the size of a deck of cards or a HUGE 2 pounder LOL!)

That said, I know the SLR would take amazing photos all.the.time. so I'm temped to bring it to the park PART of the time and the P&S the rest of the time.

Does anyone else do this or am I nuts and I should just leave the SLR at home.

HELP!

i have 3 cameras (such an addict). i take them all at various times plus the video recording.

i take my canon rebel at least 1 day during a 5 day stay. by the end of week i just have my canon elph with me that fits in my pocket. but, i really am always in search of some GREAT photos since i scrapbook.

We own a Nikon D70s (same camera the CM's use). We took it on our trip to DL the week before last and it was great. We bought a very small case (relatively speaking) that we could sling over our shoulder and set off for DL, keeping our hands free for the stroller and everything else. We opted not to take other lenses, flash, etc. so it wasn't nearly as cumbersome. Just be sure to buy one of those protective lense covers with the UV filter...works great. We also got a photopass just so that we could compare photo quality. (For the record, our photos turned out much better since we took them on the raw image setting and could edit the lighting and such without losing the quality of the photo once we got home.)

That being said, we decided after our trip that we need to buy a Nikon Coolpix point and shoot to do as you're suggesting, and take it when we aren't planning any big photo moments. The SLR is great for planned pics in front of the castle, Santa's workshop, PFF (if you have girls that are into that like ours were!), the fireworks, etc. The point and shoot will be good for the times you just want to head to the park and do the rides with a camera tossed in just case you happen upon a photo op.

We brought our D80... it was sooo worth it! I also brought our little point and shoot for times when we didn't want to carry the big one. And, the D80 is light, so no big deal!

Which lens did you bring? I don't really want to bring more than one. LOL!

Thanks!!

I take 3 dif.camera's. A Canon 30D with a 75-200mm and a long zoom, a pand S with manuel controls(fits in the shirt pocket) and a compact camcorder.
I am constantly taking pictures of everything with the P and S. I take the Dslr two days out of the 5 when I have a specific agenda for photo's and use the camcorder for everything action, along with the stills.

I ride as many rides as I can constantly taking photo's.

Have fun.

'I bring the smallest lens (have the Canon Rebel XT)simply because my nicer bigger lenses get heavy after awhile! In Feb since it had been 14 months since we visited I took the nice lens everyday and kept a spare in the locker. I wanted nice pictures of everything. This past trip since we had already been once I didn't want to carry that much around so I went as light as possible. I would love to have a small p and s, but DH would kill me if I told him I needed another camera!

This last Saturday I went with my new Nikon D40 for the first time and it worked out great! I brought the relatively small bag with the second lens, but I ended up using the 18-55 for everything. The amazing thing to me is that the D40 weighs less than the Kodak DX6490 point & shoot it's replacing. I went with the D40 based on previous experience with Nikon, quite a bit of comparison, and finally advice from this site: http://www.kenrockwell.com/ Considering the laundry list of expensive equipment he uses I was really happy to find such a great recommendation for a reasonably priced camera.

For the best possible camera for just about anything, fun or serious, I use my Nikon D40.
