Personally, the ones on the 2nd floor (lobby level) over the clothing store are by far my favorites. The very first 1-bedroom (can't remember the room number) over the clothing store, which sits right on the first of the 3 arches in the red section of the Boardwalk facade, was my favorite Boardwalk room ever. It was lobby level, making it nice coming to and going from. It had a staircase down to the Boardwalk just 3 or 4 rooms down...great for heading out to Epcot or the Boardwalk. And best of all, it had the most stupendously, massively HUGE balcony available anywhere in Disney World! The balcony is roughly 8-feet deep by 20+ feet wide, with a wall to one side and a full bulkhead to the other, fully covered by the big arch overhead and weatherproof, totally private and secure, enough that you could sleep out there with noone seeing you. And noise-wise, I never heard a thing from the Boardwalk despite sleeping in until 10am in the mornings. If you opened your balcony doors, you'd hear life going on, but with it closed, nothing but silence.
Check out the frontal view of the Boardwalk, and look at the three long arches just over the clothing store area...underneath the big pillars...that's the rooms with the big balcony. In comparison, many of the upper-floor rooms have uncovered iron rail balconies barely large enough to fit two small chairs...so having a balcony big enough to run laps on was quite lovely.
I'll be there again in December and in January, and I'm certainly going to try to request those either time!
I agree on that aroma...a few times those morning smells wafted up when I'd go out on the balcony, and made me hungry!
