Hello DISERS, I would like some help please. We are going to Disney and Universal in June for 10 days and plan on renting a car and taking the kids to the beach one day for their fist beach experience. I want a beach that is close to Disney, family friendly, that we could possibly see surfers, has great whole in the wall seafood restaurant that is easy to find. I would love to hear anybody's recommendations. Thanks for your input :thumbsup2

We always go to Daytona. It takes about an hour and a half to get there. The kids have a ball. The beach always has plenty of families there. We always park at the free parking lot called Sunshine Park (or something like that). Most of Daytona is kind of run down, though. I believe Cocoa beach might be closer but we have never been there so I can't comment. I also can't comment on a seafood restaurant. Your kids will have a great time. This is always one of our best days - just a nice break from theme parks.

We stayed at Cocoa Beach a couple of days in February. It was great! We stayed down by The Pier and there were many surfing. There was also a restaurant that had great seafood at the end of the Pier (to the left)--I can't remember the exact name but it was something like the Atlantic Grill. They had great daily specials and the prices were reasonable.

We had a wonderful time there. It was less than an hour drive from Orlando. You can also see the cruise ships come in and out and see Cape Canaveral. The beach is a little rough and the sand is a little course but it was a very nice couple of days!

This time we are down we are going to stay at Clearwater Beach for two nights and two days. If anyone has any recommendations there, I'd be appreciative. We are staying at the Holiday Inn and Suites.

It sounds like you will have a great vacation!

We have been to Clearwater the past three years and stay at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort. We enjoy a resataurant called Salt Rock Grill (they have a web site). Captain Memo's Pirate Cruise is a little "touristy" but we had a great time.

We just really enjoy the soft, white sand beach!

We have been going to the beaches between Clearwater and St.Petersburg. We have stayed in Indian Rocks Beach the last couple of years. It is very quiet, family oriented, smallish size condos, good food. There is a place called John's Pass that has good restaurants, dolphin cruises, a great Pirate cruise. It is on the gulf side so the water is a little calmer than the atlantic so probably not see any surfers. But it is a great beach!!!!

We went to Cocoa Beach in November and saw lots of surfers. The water was too rough to swim in but fun wading in. We got lots of smallish seashells. We had fun, but next time I think we'll try the calmer waters on the other side of FL.

Just a little FYI-it was hard for us to find a good swimming/wading beach at Cocoa. I'd never been there before, granted, but we couldn't find any nice public beaches. We ended up parking between two run down condos and paying the meter. No public restrooms where we were either, although I did learn that there ARE some on Cocoa beach. So if you do go there you may want to print out a map before hand. And ask for specific directions to the public beach or a nice family friendly, beachy, area.

I would highly recommend you looking into New Smyrna Beach, it is just south of Daytona and is a much more quiet, typical, beach community. Like Daytona, you can drive on the beach -which the kids will probably think is pretty cool(I know they have restricted access since I lived in the area, but I believe there are still several places you can drive right on). The surf there is moderate and generally safe -actually you tend to find more surfers here than Daytona. Cocoa Beach has great surf and can be rough -maybe not the best for inexperienced ocean swimmers. It does have Ron Jon's which is worth the visit, however. I love the Gulf Coast beaches as others have mentioned, but it's not the ocean and offers virtually no surf. Check it out on the web, I'm sure they have a pretty good website. Also, I've heard pretty good things about a casual seafood restaurant in New Smyrna called Boston's Fish House(they have a website, not sure if I can post here). The only thing I ask is please don't tell too many people about New Smyrna -it's kind of our own little secret!

I had been to Daytona several times as a kid and I really liked it but last November, we decided to take our kids to Clearwater instead. As others have said, the water is calmer and the water is so blue and pretty. It was a beautiful beach and my kids loved it even though it was a little cold in November.

I do want to offer a little advice for anyone going to Clearwater. Make sure you have maps to anywhere you will be going and allow plenty of time to get there. We found the roads in Clearwater to be very confusing and we got lost several times. I remember one road that we ended up on several times and it seemed to keep changing names. :scared1:

Maybe it was just us but by the time we got where we were going, DH and I were so stressed from being lost that we just wanted to leave. We went there for one night before heading to Disney and it wasn't the best way to start our vacation. I'm sure it would be great if you make sure to know how to get where you want to go.

This year I had planned to visit the East coast instead but my Mom has decided to go with us and she wants to visit her brother who lives in St. Pete so it looks like we are going back to the Gulf. This time, I will have maps and very good directions.

Boy, I didn't expect anyone to come back with New Smyrna!!! It's a wonderful beach that is not overly crowded but a great ocean experience. Plenty of surfers, seashells, and nice big waves for the kids to play in. Driving on the beach was a blast for my kids and you could go quite a ways in both directions. As said before, don't tell a lot of people, would hate for this little gem to get ran over. They have a really nice city web site and I believe there's a beach cam.

Good Luck!!!

edit: Boston's Fish House is good with good variety. Well worth it.

My family is looking to take a day-trip to a beach to break up our park touring in a couple weeks, so this thread has been helpful and timely.

New Smyrna looks pretty attractive for us because of its proximity to WDW (I have been tending toward a father drive to one of the parks in Clearwater). After looking at the New Smyrna website and on Google maps I still had a couple questions.

* Do you need to get a beach tag (sorry too much Jersey shore in my past)?

* Google street view didn't show too much on-street parking on Atlantic Ave and the other streets seem pretty residential. Is there any good tips on where to park for the day?

Thanks for the help!

Depending on age of kids, I recommend going to a no cars beach. If you do go where cars park on the beach, set up your chairs and lay on the towels etc. only behind your car not on the side between cars. SUVs can't see bodies lying on towels and again this year a sunbather was run over.

If you have kids set up on the water side of the" road "walking your kids through the traffic and warning them that they cannot run back to the car for any reason without you.

We love New Smyrna. Beach is wide. Our favorite place to eat is The Breakers- a bar/restaurant. Friendly, good food but not a whole lot of tables because part of it fell in the ocean during the 2004 hurricanes. I think it is on Flagler where the surf shops are. I know there are lots of surfers at the inlet, but it is also the shark bite capitol of the world.

Cocoa Beach is also nice. There are parks south on A1A that are great for smaller kids. For example, Lori Wilson park also has a nature trail to walk through. I usually bring my nieces and nephews there because the bottom goes out shallower than in some areas where water is overhead and then maybe knee deep farther out etc.

Best spots to see surfers are mostly at the pier, 16th street, and down at Patrick Airforce Base at First light and Picnic tables(has a pavilion and yucky bathroom that doesn't really have a door so not real private.) You can rent boards at Ron Jons.

Go farther South to Melbourne area and you can see rock formations at low tide that are really cool, but sort of dangerous to go out in. Farther south to Indiatlantic and Melbourne Beach areas and you get less rocks, public beaches with pavillions and bathrooms, and you can usually find larger shells.

June is generally "Lake Atlantic " time on the East coast so not a lot of good waves. It also isn't as good a time to find bigger shells. Still a great time to be at the beach.

To see the best surfing Sebastian Inlet state park is the place to go if you don't go to the inlet in New Smyrna. There is a charge to get in the park. There is a little restaurant, a museum, the jetty, and a walk bridge that goes half way over the inlet where you can watch the small boats come in and out. Just a little south there is a treasure museum that is interesting, too.

Regarding the beach tag -- I haven't been in about 5 years, but they should charge you as you enter the beach(it is drive/park on the beach itself). I think there are 4 or 5 places of access off S. Atlantic Ave.

If you think you don't want to drive on the beach, you could probably park at some shopping center near a beach access and cross S. Atlantic Ave. They also may have some parks on the beach side where you could land the car but I'm not aware of them. For us it was always easier to land on the beach and not have to lug anything to the beach.

Also, I agree with RabFLmom in that if your children are young your best bet is to set up a spot on the water side of the "road." Depending on the tide it generally isn't an issue because the beach is very wide, but at high tide the area between where people park and the water can get close. Be smart with younger children who can "get loose."

New Smyrna sounds great....until you mention the sharks....then I googled it and saw all the shark attack reports. I think I may stick with Clearwater!:confused3 :scared1:

I never saw a shark at New Smyrna, but they are there, just like any warm ocean water(or even Clearwater for that matter). The fact that New Smyrna has many surfers adds to the likelihood that someone might get bit, but these instances are rarely fatal(not to make it seem like nothing) and most surfers would tell you that it's not enough to make them stop surfing the area. If it's a concern, stay in waist deep water.

More people get struck by lighting than bit by a shark -I would warn anyone that when on the beach(or pool) in Florida and thunderstorm clouds approach... Get to shelter quick! It's always amazed me that some people will leave the kids in the pool during a thunderstorm at Disney.

Some good advice, GAN! Just be aware and use good common sense. I've also seen parents leave children in the pools when it lightnings! We get out of dodge...the storms come up very fast and can be pretty intense, even though often quick! We'll probably go to Clearwater this time, but down the road on subsequent trips, as we visit a lot, maybe we'll try new Smyrna. How is St. Augustine? It also sounds like an amazing place.

We just came back from a week at Indian Shores and hoenstly we LOVED it. We have done Cocoa Beach and will not do it again after Indian Shores. It is so family oriented, the beach was gorgeous, waves for the kids to body surf, fabulous restaurants nearby....Madeira Beach has a boardwalk called Johns Pass and there are a bunch of restaurants, shopping, walk teh pier, see teh fisherman, pirate boat, we even saw dolphins swimming right infront of us. We loved it and can't wait to return. Clearwater is also really nice.

I have been to many Florida beaches over the years. My favorite by far is St. Pete Beach. All things considered, this is my favorite overall beach anywhere. I strongly recommend it.

After hearing all of the responses, it is making me think of considering Indian Shores or St. Pete Beach. Does anyone have a hotel or condo they would recommend at either of these places? I would appreciate any advice.

We were just at Indian Shore last week.....it was so hard to leave!
We used this rental company and stayed at the Beach Cottages II:

And I know alot of people that have used this website to find a condo down there:

Indian Shore is great b/c there are fabulous restauants, beach is perfect for kids, soft white sand, nice small waves for the kids to buggie board and you are inbetween Clearwater and St Pete's, 15-20 mins to get to either one from Indian Shores.
You won't be disappointed!
