What areas off of I-8 are ok?

So, I've stayed in the area south of I-8, west of I-5 - and I don't want to do that again. I've also stayed in La Mesa and found that acceptable. Are there any other areas near I-8 that are acceptable? We're thinking just a single night, driving in on I-8 from AZ, going to Sea World in the morning and then heading up to Disneyland. Any suggestions of good/bad areas?

Hotel Circle in Mission Valley. It has nice chain hotels.

Ayres is a chain of nice hotels, and there is one in Alpine.

We've been staying at Holiday Inn Bayside on Harbor about 4 miles from Sea World. If you book online and select Entertainment rate it will be around $65/night with free parking. I do have an entertainment book but in all the times booking this way they've never once asked for the card.

I don't stay at hotel circle area hotels much anymore. They're often overpriced and many charge for parking.
