What are your thoughts?..

If stores think it is a bother to give back 1 penny, then why not make the price $1.00. I would be happy to pay $1.00 that the product is then be annoyed by not getting my 1 penny change back. Who do they think they are, that is my money. I don't care if it is a penny, it's mine to decide if i want it back or not. I put all my change in a jar and right before we go to WDW, i cash it in and use it as my spending money.
People complain that they don't have money, but yet they think nothing of walking away from a few cents here and there. It all adds up.

Everyone has different thoughts which I appreciate hearing. Like I said its not so much the penny. But I do keep my reciepts as I keep track of what I spend and not only that it does have the last numbers from my account on it. It is interesting to see peoples thoughts on this though. Thanks for your input. :)

I wouldn't be concerned about not getting a penny back, but I wouldn't like for a cashier to 'presume' that I don't want the penny, or the receipt when it's my debit card. That would bug me. I don't think one is being cheap if they do want their penny back.

Can we turn it around a bit for a moment....

For every time you meet up with a single cashier, that cashier has probably spent several hours now with hundreds of rude customers talking down to her, throwing money on the counter instead of handing it too her, and probably stating rudely, "why would I want the receipt, I'll just throw it away. You throw it away..."

My wife works at Lowes. She apologized for not being so pleasant to the 3 out of 243 customers during her mere 5 hour shift that wasn't rude to her and looked down upon just because she is working a cash register.

I look at it this way, it is my penny, and until I say that you can keep it, it needs to be returned to me. Most of the time I will put the penny in the little trays on the counter that say, "need a penny, take a penny". But, it is my decision to make, not the cashiers.

As far as the receipt, I need it back. If I don't get it back, how will I know to deduct it from my checking account??? I am very careful about balancing my checkbook, the receipts are a necessity for me.

I'm not cheap. I just don't appreciate someone thinking that they can keep my money.

"A penny saved is a penny earned"
OP, I'm with you, I've posted about this very subject.
At least I'm asked "Do you want your change back?"
They're still surprised though, when I say yes.

Yes, I would like my change and my receipt thank you.
:)

Well, if they did it twice a week to me they'd get a dollar. I'd much rather sacrifice the buck than take the time to wait for one whole penny and be THAT customer. If the dollar is that important to you, by all means demand it back.

And I'm sure any business would be glad to show you the amount of money they took in by keeping small change and compare it to the amount of money they lost when a customer shoplifted that bag of coffee or candy bar.

OMG! Whatever will the store think if you ask for your change back?? :sad2:

Agreed. I hate pennies AND receipts, so I would love to have these cashiers. :lmao:

Not me -- I want every single receipt and every penny. Who knows when I will need that penny. We have a marble fireplace in our living room that 20 years ago I literally rolled change to pay for. Without those pennies, the fireplace wouldn't be there.

Call me cheap -- but, it's my penny.

I agree, it's not being cheap. Imagine how much extra money they would make if they did that to everyone?

Also, in regards to the receipt thing - I prefer to be asked if I'd like my receipt. There are too many scams out there and I would prefer to have proof of my transaction. :thumbsup2

There's a convenience store that I frequent that never, ever gives me a receipt and it drives me crazy.. I always check my receipts to be sure I've been charged the right amount (or the sale price) and that's kind of hard to do if they don't give me the receipt..

As for the penny - two things come to mind.. First of all, I started saving pennies for my DGD the day she was born - she'll be 12 next month - and believe me, those "pennies" are nothing to be sneezed at..:thumbsup2

Secondly, I always remember my dad saying to me, "If you don't save pennies, you'll never have dollars".. ;)

So for some of us, money is money - even if it's pennies..:goodvibes

Believe me when I say I understand about cashering, I worked it, as well as managing a store for nine yrs. So yes it is very hard when customers can be rude. But I also know that cashiers need to explain there overages and shortages in the drawers. There are certain things you begin to see as a flag. I have run into those situations myself and had to confront the issue. Its not pleasant to confront someone on those issues either. So I appreciate the cashiers I see. These are just the few who just presume I did not want my change or the reciept.

To give you a storie my friend who worked as a manager at another store ( same co ) her cashier got caught chargeing on a card and threw away the reciept before the person came back in. Unfortunately it was a sherrif. No more job. :scared1:

I wish I had those cashiers in my town! I am so tired of getting a receipt for a debit card purchase - I never use them to reconcile any purchase. I just go online and keep track that way. It suits me much better not to get a receipt and if I do get one I wad it up and throw it away or ask the clerk to recycle it.

I would make a point of waiting for change that was a nickel or more, but a penny just isn't worth the embarassment I would feel at standing there tapping my fingers waiting for it. Sorry, that's just too cheap for me.
I always get my receipt so it can be written in the checkbook.

I would also wait for the penny. DH & I are both avid change savers & throw those pennies in our change bucket. We paid for our first purchase of DVC points with saved change! The pennies add up & I'll stand there & be embarrassed if need be! :goodvibes

It is very rude of the cashier to make assumptions. It's not their place to decide who needs the penny back and who wants their receipt.

I always get receipts at fast food places because a couple of years ago there was a case at Wendy's where someone working the drive-thru line was able to double charge the cards and keep the extra. I'm not sure how that worked, but they did it for months before someone noticed they were double charged on their card and brought it to the manager's attention.

When I buy something that costs--for example--$4.51, I would NEVER tell the cashier, "I think I'll just pay $4.50--I'll keep your penny, okay?" Do I think the store is being "cheap" by requiring me to pay the entire $4.51 instead of just rounding it off to $4.00? No, of course not.
It should be the same way with customers' change.

My DD5 is collecting coins for a charity. You should see her glee when she finds a penny on the sidewalk or in the couch cushions! They really do add up.

I love when they forget to give me my receipt .. at Walgreens and Panda Express if they don't give you one and you have to ask for Walgreens you get $5.00 and a free meal at Panda Express.

But in general I am always asked if I want my receipt and I always get my penny..maybe Im lucky?

It's MY penny, and like someone else said, the store would't tell you, oh, we know the price is $4.51, just give us $4.50 and we're good. There was a story ( and I'm too lazy to look for it ) in the news years ago about a bank teller who, over the course of 20+ years, took a penny from each transaction he processed. The amount of money he ended up with was staggering, and I'm sure earned him some time in prison. Do I think Bobby at the fruit stand in the mall is paying for college with pennies? No. But I still want my freaking change.

I don't think it is cheap to recieve all of your change.:confused3
I always keep my reciepts, I can recycle it myself.
It should not be a privalige to get your reciept or your correct change.

I agree. I'm really surprised by people who think getting a receipt or correct change is an annoyance! :confused3 If you don't want your change or receipt it's easy to decline it or leave it sitting on the counter.

It is not in any way shape or form acceptable for a cashier to decide you don't want your change - whether it's a penny, a dollar, or more. A receipt can be tossed later by either customer or cashier - IF customer doesn't want it.

I had a larger amount show up online on a debit purchase. I had to go to the bank and show them the receipt to get it fixed. So you are taking a risk not keeping the receipt, you'll just have to accept the over debit.

I am a late convert to debit cards. I do use mine for groceries and in stores. Don't think I'd use them for anything so small as a fast food purchase.
Never have used them for gasoline purchases. Good thing too because we have had a rash of instances here where folks managed to skim debit card numbers from INSIDE the gas pump. The High Tech Task force 2 months ago finally issued a recommendation that people only use cash to buy gasoline.

Ok, Debit cards are not like Credit cards. The money comes out of your account immediately, just like cash out of your pocket. Unless, you have your brain directly tied into your checking account you do not know what you are spending. It also, in some cases doesn't record immediately. My motto is...show me a person that doesn't keep track of how much money they are spending and I'll show you a person that pays a lot of bank fees for overdrawn accounts.

I use Quicken to keep track of my money and I update it daily by using the receipts that I insist upon when I make a Debit purchase. Obsessive? Maybe, but I always know were I stand. I keep a minimum in my checking account because it doesn't earn interest, so I keep a close eye on my actual balance.
