I believe the US $ exchange rate is sitting at about $1.20 (as of Friday). If you know someone who works at one of the big banks, they can probably get you their employee discount on foreign currency exchange.

OK, I bought 400$ in travellers checks week before last, maybe the last of feb or first of mar and it cost me 469$.

I bought $600 US the last week of February, and it cost me about $710 Cdn.

I bought 294$ US on Friday past for 349$.. so that's 1.19.

Last year we were doing much better.. My US$ exchange was around 1.13 or 1.14 in May of 2006.

When I have extra money that I want to buy US$ with, I call the major banks in my area, and they have a prerecorded message with the exhange rate at the begining of the current day. It is helpful to see what bank offers the best rate. I have a no service charge US account at 2 of the 3 banks. Exchange seems to be around 1.19 the last week or so.

I almost always use Money Mart for buying my US money, their rate is always less than the bank and CAA and we also have another currence exchange here, but Money Mart is always a little less than them for US $ also. Example was today, MM was 1.1844 and the other currency exchange was 1.1963, the bank I believe was at least 1.20 today to buy.

If you need a lot, you can call them ahead and sometimes they give you a better rate if you are buying a lot.

I just called out local Money Mart and they want $1.192....wonder if that's any cheaper than the banks or CAA? Sounds like each store can charge what they want?

Do they charge a fee for the money as well....I forgot to ask.

Just to update a little, I just purchased from Money Mart this afternoon, the rate was $1.165
