What are you making for Christmas Dinner?

Darcy -- Thanks for all the great ideas! I'm really thinking this will go over well and may become a new tradition.

Christmas dinner in my house is ham, homemade macaroni and cheese, pineapple, green beans (steamed, NOT the casserole), carrots, harvard beets, rolls and butter. Desert is Swedish Apple Pie, pumpkin pie and cookies.

Ok, I'll bite -- how does Swedish apple pie differ from pie crust apple pie, or Dutch apple pie? Just the name sounds yummy!

Swedish apple pie you put the apples/cinnamon/sugar in the pie plate and dump the 'crust' mixture over the top of it and bake it...there is no real crust.

the dough: 1 c sugar, 3/4 cup melted butter, 1 c flour, 1 egg. The apple mixture: 6 sliced apples, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tsp cinnamon. Put the apple mixture in a greased pie plate, pour the dough on top and bake at 350 for 45-50 minutes.

Now I'm going to have to try it! It sounds easy and really good, especially since I'm the only one in our family who really likes the crust

filet mignon with a wasabi cream sauce

Yum! Do you mind sharing your recipe for the wasabi cream sauce? One of my favorite local restaurants (that closed :( ) had a wasabi cream sauce they put over chicken that was TDF!

Dinner is at my house this year. My dinner is pretty standard fare:

Apps:
cheese ball & crackers
deviled eggs
veggies & dip

Dinner:
Ham
lasagna (tradition started by my great grandma)
7 layer salad (white trash salad as my sis calls it :lmao:)
green beans almondine
roasted tri-colored peppers
garlic mashed potatoes
homemade baked beans
rolls
olives (my kids insist on these :) )

Dessert:
Not sure yet. My son's birthday is the 21st, so we get a cake for that. Add in all the cookies/fudge, and we're usually overflowing with sweets by Xmas. I am contemplating on going the easy way out and ordering some pies from Marie Callender's. If I do, it'll likely be their German chocolate pie and their lemon cream cheese pie. Yummy! Just wish they weren't so expensive!

Year after year we have:

Ham
White Potatos
Sweet Potatos
Peas
Cranberry Sauce
Pickles Galore
Green Olives
Black Olives
Celery with Cheese and some with Peanut Butter
Warm Rolls
Stuffing
And at least 3 pies for dessert

We spend Christmas Eve at both my inlaws' & my parents' houses - one place for lunch & one place for dinner. Both my mom & MIL do another "thanksgiving" type meal. I invite both sets of parents to our house for Christmas Day, &, previously, I have prepared yet another thanksgiving type meal.

So, this year, I decided I wanted something different... I'm trying to go for an "elegant" theme...:rotfl2:

Appetizer -

some kind of cheese w/ crackers & pear slices
mulled apple cider

Meal -

standing rib roast or crown rib roast (haven't decided yet)
sausage & wild rice stuffing
cream cheese mashed potatoes
sweet potato souffle
honey mustard glazed carrots
bacon wrapped green beans
fruit salad (for the kids)
cranberry chutney

Desserts -

key lime cake
mocha cheesecake
gingerbread trifle
assorted Christmas cookies

* strawberry pretzel salad (for my DH)

Of course, this is just my plan! Haven't bought anything yet or begun to prepare or bake anything yet! ;)

Just the kids and I - so for Christmas Eve I got these little cornish game hens to make (the kids are so excited about these things!). Then for Christmas we will go a ham. I will probably end up with a ton a of leftovers to eat for days - LOL!

In the past we have gone to my moms in Vegas and we've done a casino buffet - that is awesome! But, Dh is away and Disney is in 6+ weeks so this year we are staying home.

ham with cranberry/orange chutney
corn souffle
scalloped potatoes
asparagus
glazed baby carrots
coleslaw (hubby's tradition, I don't understand)
rolls
german chocolate pecan pie
Christmas cookies, of course!

Pizza :rotfl:

We do the huge family Christmas Eve-- Italian seafood overload-- at my parents'. We usually get together for the "traditional" Christmas dinner on Christmas Day, but I got everyone to agree this year to do it on the 26th instead. That way we still have it, but everyone can stay home and enjoy their kids and relax on Christmas Day.

So Christmas Day I'm just going to make a nice late breakfast after presents and we plan to hang out in our pajamas and eat snacks for the rest of the day. :goodvibes

We usually have pretty much the exact same meal we have for Thanksgiving...
turkey
stuffing
mashed potatos
gravy
sweet potato casserole
green bean casserole
rolls & butter
cranberry sauce

However this year I am really not feeling like doing all that again, I want to do something different where neither of us are stuck in the kitchen for any length of time. I would love to be able to really hang out with the kids most of the day. Especially since my dh will be working on Christmas Eve this year. I want easy, but not sure what to do...

As an update to my post above, we decided this year we are going to do lots of appetizers and snacks on Christmas Day. And THEN we're going to do our big holiday dinner on New Years instead!! We're excited about this!

Ham
Potato Salad (so good in the winter when I never think to make it otherwise, but my mom always made it with ham for Christmas)
Mac and Cheese
Green Bean casserole (my sister)
Plain Veggie (changes year to year)
Pickled Beets
Applesauce
Devilled Eggs
Rolls and butter
Cookies
Pumpkin Pie (my sister)
Ice cream

A lot of things on our menu can be made the day before and are easy to serve buffet style, so that really helps out on Christmas Day.

Christmas Eve
~all day snacking~
smoked sliced ham sandwiches
cheese and crackers
cream cheese dip
pepperoni
eggnog
hot cocoa w/marshmallows
cookies

Christmas Day
~morning breakfast-brunch~
bacon/sasauge
eggs
pancakes
orange juice
~evening dinner~
roasted turkey breast w/gravy
leftover sliced ham
mashed potatoes
green bean casserole
cranberry sauce
dinner rolls
pistachio pudding
apple pie
pumpkin pie
wine ~lots of wine~:rotfl:

I'll be grilling steaks or making spaghetti, whichever DS and DD request. We invite my mom over as it's her Birthday:wizard:and then we'll all go to the evening Avatar showing. Lounging around in PJs all day with an evening movie is our tradition:santa:Oh, and watching the Disney parade on TV gets us in the mood for our annual summer trip:cool1:Merry Christmas:hug:

Dh's aunt has everyone for Chirstmas eve - she says she is surprising us with something different for the meal this year so I have no idea what we'll be having but I'm bring a dessert. I'm making a chocolate cherry cake.

Christmas we have our big meal with my family at my parent's house. Again, no idea what mom is serving but it is usually some type of roast with all the fixings.

For our immediate family I'm making a nice bruch. We'll be having a bacon and asparagus quiche, a fruit salad and eclairs. May add other items but not sure yet. We'll also have chocolate milk and oj which are both treats at our house and I purchased some sparkling grape juice to surprise the younger girls.

There is supposed to be the possiblity of a big snow on Christmas eve night so if we can't get to mom and dad's on Christmas day I'll have to defrost something!

Christmas morning I am making a egg bake with hashbrowns, sausage, eggs, and veggies. I do it the night before so I just have to put it in the oven and bake it off Christmas morn.
Christmas dinner we have around 3pm. It's only my Mom, brother, my DH, DD 4, and my DD 10.

I am making:
ham glazed in orange juice, ginger ale, cloves, and pineapple juice. (it's an 11pounder)
bree smashed red potatoes with heavy cream
yellow squash (bought a whole bag for .79 and have to use them lol)
yams with marshmellows and honey
rolls
mixed veggies or brocolli
sweet coleslaw with pineapple tidbits and marshmellows(my Mom's contribution)
hot apple cider or egg nog to drink throughout the day
a Christmas bunt cake for dessert
deviled eggs (any holiday must)
possibly cranberry sauce

So needless to say I am going to have a ton of left overs even after I send some home with my Mom and brother. I plan on making split pea soup or potato chowder and scalloped potatoes with the left overs.

Wow, I didn't think I would see a cultural difference between the states and Canada but I do! Everyone I know does turkey for Christmas dinner (our Thanksgiving is early October). I don't have to cook a dinner this year so we are off to the three families for three turkey dinners (does get a bit much).
We have:

Apps:
cheese, kolbassa and crackers
hot crab dip
shrimp
veggie-crescent roll pizzas

Dinner:
turkey
stuffing
sausage patties (made from the tube of sausage meat)
mashed potatoe casserole (with garlic, cauliflower, cream cheese and sour cream all mashed up together, NOT low fat but soooooo good!)
veggies including brussel sprouts

Dessert:
varies by family - my mom makes English trifle, my dad makes chocolate yule log and Christmas pudding, my inlaws serve the cheesecake made with CoolWhip and canned cherries (very 70s but now a tradition)

Have a Merry Christmas everyone!
