What are you getting your GRANDPARENTS for Christmas?

But ideas for an older retired man who doesn't play golf or fish and lives in Florida are hard to come by!

My stand-by for my dad (81) has been socks and underwear. He loves them.
Many times, we 5 kids (lol my oldest sister is 57 but we are still kids to him) will pool our money sometimes and get him something he needs around the house. One year it was a couch, another year it was a recliner chair, several years ago it was a small trailer to attach to his pickup.

My parents are both in their mid to late 70s and are grandparents to 4 children.

I usually get my mom scratch off lottery tickets. Candy that she loves that is only made at Christmas and a photo calendar from Shutterfly.

My dad usually gets a gift card for Barnes and Noble and for his favorite chinese restaurant.

I also get them the Hallmark Grandparent Ornament every year.

Last year I got them two rockers for their front porch and the cushions from Cracker Barrell.

For about 15 years, I have sent my grandparents in Florida a wreath from LLBean. They have always looked forward to that package and it's a nice decoration that they would not go out & buy themselves. LLBean also ships Christmas centerpieces and small table top Christmas trees.

One year we did all chip in & send a Keurig. My grandmother liked decaf and my grandfather liked regular coffee. They always had 2 coffee pots on the counter. My grandfather still loves using the Keurig and offering guests different flavors, etc.

This year I am sending my grandfather the wreath and a basket from Peterborough Basket Company. The soup in the basket is also made in NH. http://www.peterborobasket.com/p-1252-peterboro-100-new-england-made-gift-basket.aspx

Off-topic, but this is my first Christmas without any grandparents. Please, please appreciate them while you have them.

Last Christmas I gave my grandmother an Edible Arrangement. She doesn't -- didn't -- eat enough fruits and vegetables, but she was enchanted with it. I had planned to repeat the gift this year. She especially liked the chocolate-covered strawberries.

She didn't really need anything, so in previous years I'd given her gift certificates for mani-pedis or restaurants, two things that she enjoyed tremendously. Not particularly imaginative though. One year not long ago I gave her a small (live, delicious smelling) table-top tree, which she thoroughly enjoyed.

For my husband's aunt, who is in her 80s, we send a Christmas bouquet every year. She's in Montana and we started this tradition when she hosted his parents and Grandmother. Sadly, the only one left is Auntie. It's expensive to get flowers delivered but she appreciates them. We started using a local florist there in a Billings so at least I feel like I'm supporting small business!

My Grandparents are in their mid 80s and they get a photo calendar from Costco with pictures of our son. They adore him so this makes them happy.

Grandparents are difficult to buy for, I agree. But I try hard to make them happy. Our list of grandparents to buy for has significantly dwindled in the past couple of years and it's sad.

My (dad's mom) grandmother loves birds so we give her things like various bit houses for her yard and gift certificates for the seed & other treats she likes to feed them

My (moms dad) grandfather gets a year supply of water softener delivered and hauled to basement ( where the softer is)

My mom is getting some Vera bradley luggage I scored a great deal on due to a post on the DIS

my dad and stepmom are In a huge financial bind and have asked that anything we would spend on them go towards thier 2 kids ( my 14 year old sister and 13 year old brother) as they won't be able to do much for the kids this year, so we are giving them a gift basket for the family loaded with everyone's favorite treats as well as extra gifts for my younger siblings

DH grandmother (moms mom) gets a gift certificate to the hair salon that covers about 6 visits. She LOVES this and tells us year round how much she appreciates it.

DH parents are getting a gift certif to the cruise line that we are all going on next year. They can use it towards thier vacation balance or towards on board credits. Whatever they want :)

I buy my granndparents meat.
Since they are on a limited budget, they can't splurge on good steaks.

I purchase a pack of steaks and a whole pork lion from SAm's club. We cut the loin into pork steaks and roasts. I package each one in an individual freezer bag that is labeled.

They can get many meals of of it. They usually split one steak between them.

They look forward to this gift every year.

At first, my sisters though I was crazy giving them meat.

Do you have to cut it up yourself or will Sam's do that for you? I'd like to do this for ourselves actually, but I was thinking it would be nice to have the butcher do it because I am lousy at estimating poundage of meat just by looking at it. Sounds like a nice idea for your relatives! We live so far from ours that I usually order from Omaha Steaks. My parents are frugal and won't spend the money for good meat for themselves, but really enjoy it when they get some good steaks as a gift!

My husband cuts it. He gets a pork roast from each end. Then slices the rest into pork chops.

You could ask the butcher to cut it for you.

Great thread!

Trying to figure out what to give DH's Grandmother (92!) who lives with his parents.

Having DS2 make handprint ornaments for grandparents. Then we have calendars for pictures.

Was looking at GC for IHOP, Sweet Tomatoes (never been) and a few other restaurants in area. Of course, wherever we send her, she's in need of transportation and companions.

But we still want to send something that will last all year. Last year we gave her a mobile for the yard.

My grandpa is 93 and is not in a good place. My grandma died last year, he has some dementia starting, can hardly see because of cataracts and won't wear his hearing aids. Depression along with everything else makes it hard to figure out a gift because he doesn't do much anymore. So I will be framing the kids' school pictures for him.

My husband's grandmother is still living but in poor health and pretty much home bound. I really don't have a clue what to give her. Last year we gave her a new robe. This year???

We get my Papa a gift card to the restaurant he eats at almost every day. We just had family pictures done, and I'm going to add a framed one for him (done it before and he likes it).

I have no idea what to get DH's grandma.

I didn't see a thread yet for Grandparents so I thought I would get one going! What are some go to ideas, or new things you are looking at buying for your Grandparents?

I typically get my one Grandma a gift certificate to her favorite fabric store for her quilting supplies and my other Grandma I typically buy a gift certificate for a day at the spa.

And of course, the obligatory framed picture of our kids/family, that is one thing they love getting every year.

I really would like some different ideas this year - mix it up and get something they aren't expecting.

Help us out by telling us how old your grandparents are. It could make a real difference.

I am not sure that Sweet Tomatoes is very practical for someone of that age. Unless she is really good about getting around, its like a buffet and everytime we have ever been there, its been really crowded and I know my 75 year old mother had a really hard time getting around the last time we went. I can't imagine someone 92 getting around the restaurant well without help.

Believe it or not, my 80 year old grandmother (my mom's mother) loves horror movies. The bloodier the better :lmao: That's all she likes to get as gifts. Oh, she also likes candles and any book Judge Judy writes :rotfl: I love her, she's great, she curses like a sailor too!

My 87 year old grandfather (my dad's father) recently had some eye surgeries that have impaired his vision and he's not able to do all the things he likes to do. I'm not sure what I'll get him for Xmas this year.

My DH's grandmother is 83 and she loves carousels, so I'm going with that theme and hopefully can find her something nice.

When my mother started to lose her eyesight I bought her a talking caller ID, a talking wristwatch, and a talking alarm clock. She really enjoyed these gifts and was able to get a lot of use out of them.

Thank you so much for these great ideas!!

Last year we got one of DH's grandmas a puzzle book. She mentioned to us once that she liked to do the puzzles in the daily paper so we thought about the puzzle book. What a hit! She was thrilled with it and later told us earlier this year how she was still doing her puzzles!
