My son will be turning 8 two days after Christmas so we are hit with two major present buying events back to back every year. It's always a challenge to find some surprises that he wasn't expecting. This year he is into Pokemon and Mario. We got him the new Super Mario Wii game he has been asking for over and over. He also asked for the game where your mind turns the fan on and makes the balls move around the course- sorry forgot the name of it! Haven't been able to find that in stock and not sure if would buy it or not as it seems like he will be bored with it very quickly.

Just wondering what others were getting their kids in this age range. I did break down and get him a Pokemon Wii and DS game but I refuse to encourage this anymore. I would really like to find something more educational or not violent/video game related.

Any ideas of what you're kids are asking for or getting?

My eight year old, who loves Pokemon, Wii and Mario too, is getting a metal detector. Something different that will help get him outside. He's all about treasure hunting - so I'm hoping this gets him started :o).

Mine wants nothing to do with pokemon or mario so our gifts may or may not work. :laughing:

He's been pineng over Sims Agents for the DS and the Lego Medieval Market Villiage, so Santa is bringing those. As parents we are buying him another Snap Circuits set (bigger than his current one which he LOVES) and the box hardcover gift set of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books (esp since the 1st movie comes out in Feb). He's read 2 of the books already and loves them so this will complete his set.

My 9 year old wasn't asking for anything for Christmas so we took at trip to Toys r Us to look around and he saw an electric scooter so that's what he has decided to ask for. I ordered it from Target online and snagged the Razor e300 for 179.00...this was the largest fastest one we saw at Toys R Us and it was well over $200.00....Maybe this will help or maybe you should take a trip by Toys r us to have him "look" around and see what catches his eye!

Have you seen snap cicuits- they have them on Amazon- they look like they are lots of fun and educational

My 8 year old son liked Tech Deck, so we got him some park gear and accessories. We also got him the "claw" game, you know the big ones they have at stores where you try and grab a stuffed animal? Well they have it in a mini-version, and that is his favorite thing of all time, so Im thinking that will be a hit. He also likes star wars so we got him light sabers,action figures, etc.

My ds8 wants Tech Deck skateboards/ramps, legos, Battle Strikers, the big Bakugan that hooks together using several smaller ones, that same game that you move the ball with your mind, and a DS.

Santa is bringing:

* Snap Circuits
* Space Agent Legos and tic tac toe Lego
* Melissa and Doug Magic set
* Indiana Jones Crystal Skull LEGO DS game
* Bed in a bag
* mammoth crocs

My 8yo asks for everything, but he plays with very little. This year he's getting Kingdom Hearts and The Legend of Starfy for the DS, a Boom Blox game for Wii (he wanted My Sims Agent, too, but I draw the line at 2 ds games). He asked for Flick Tricks so I got him a couple of those and a ramp for them and a digital camera. Oh, and a bakugon toy. He'll get a couple books too, but I haven't decided which ones yet.

I'd like to get him one more toy, but it's really hard finding something he will actually play with. He likes to play with the classic toys like wooden blocks, random legos (not sets), and hot wheels and we already have a bunch of all of those. I will put another hot wheels car in his stocking. I'm thinking maybe some soccer nets for the yard (our winter is mild) if I can find a good price on some.

I think toys that encourage him to use his imagination are just as important as toys that are labeled educational, but if you're looking for something like that the Discovery store has alot to choose from. I am getting my 10yo Snap Circuits and a working model of an engine he asked for.

Santa is bringing:

* Snap Circuits
* Space Agent Legos and tic tac toe Lego
* Melissa and Doug Magic set
* Indiana Jones Crystal Skull LEGO DS game
* Bed in a bag
* mammoth crocs

I saw that Melissa and Doug Magic set in a catalog and it looks really neat.

My DS8 is getting:

*DSi (from Santa) and some games we have bought on sale here and there (Lego, Clone Wars, Sonic)
*Mario vs. Sonic Wii game
*Air Hog flying guy with a jet pack (I got this last year for around $6 at Kmart during clearance! :) )
*Lego sets-we joined the Brickmaster club last year and saved the sets that came in the mail so he is getting them all at Christmas
*Diary of a Wimpy Kid Dog Days
*new Webkinz to keep his activated
*Singing Terps animal from the UMD

:goodvibes

My son is also turning 8, but right before Christmas. He is getting some Wii games, DS games and Legos mostly. His uncle got him a mini HD video camera which I know he will love. He also likes these little guys called GoGos, and they are super cheap, so he will get some of those in his stocking.

I have the same issue. My nine year old turns 10 right after Christmas. This year he is getting:

Nintendo dsi (hopefully the mario version on sale black Friday)
Nerf Elite Wii game (Got it for $12.50. Target marked the shelf tag wrong, but honored the price)
Legos (on sale black Friday)
Coby video camera (on sale black Friday)
Night Vision Goggles (on sale black Friday)
Skullcandy lowrider headphones

We also picked up a few Wii games during the Target sale. We will probably put one or two in his stocking. The rest will be for his birthday. He bought his Wii with his own money this past summer. He just got his first game for it about a week ago. We will not be buying any more games for a very long time.

De blob
Donkey Kong Junglebeat.
Racing (not sure of the name)
Sonic
Mountain Sports

For his stocking:

Bakugan
Stainless steel water bottle
matchbox truck (crossing my fingers I can find the one he wants)
candy
hat

Hoepefully after Black Friday I will be finished with shopping for him. Except for a couple of stocking stuffers.

DS 8 is getting

DS games
Nintendo Brickmaster mag/sets
Disney watch
Harry Potter book
Magnetix
itunes card

My DS will be 8 in a few months. We are getting him a dsi as his big gift & games to go with it. He will also get a metal detector this year since he is big into finding treasures. Another thing he has asked for is a microscope but I really don't see anything in their age group that has good ratings.

Things he has already that I'd recommend are the snap circuits (as others have already said) & he just got the "Wandmakers Guidebook" which is a huge hit. The reading level is advanced for him at this point but it comes with a magic wand, crystals, feathers, and lots of other cards and things that are in envelopes throughout the book.

I am definitely checking into the magic set that others metioned. Also--which store is going to have the Mario version of the DSI? I hate that they have such girly colors for the DSI--he is going to settle on black if I don't find anything better. Thanks for any info!

The metal detector has been mentioned a couple of times. Where are you finding them and how much $$?

DS really only wants a DSi so he is getting that. He loves snap circuits but haven't decided if I'm going to increase his set right now. He also wants new the Clue spy? version and I got him an Erector set he hasn't asked for. Plus PJs, a robe, wii game from the g-parents & some books. He's been reading the 39 Clues series so will probably add to that & try to find a new series to try.

If you need ideas, I like Learning Express or Fat Brain toys for inspiration that have some different things than the typical big box store stuff. I think they both have websites for ordering.

I have a ds9 and ds7 (almost 8). My boys like spy toys. Listening devices, motion detectors and night vision glasses. My ds 7 is getting a basketball net and my ds9 is getting a dsi as his ds is dying. My son did not like sims secret agents but loved lego battles. both boys will be getting lego. My younger son wants star wars toys too.

Just wanted to add. My ds9 loves the 39 clues too. Gordan Korman wrote one of the books. My son has really enjoyed his other books. He has written a bunch of trilogies. If your son has not read any of his other books, that might be an author to try. He really liked his on the run series.(6 books and then a trilogy on the same characters)

DS 8 is getting the Lego City constructions site from Santa. We are giving him and DS 5 a Wii so they will also get Mario Kart and Toy Story Mania. He also is asking for an Air Hog helicopter (Walmart BF $19). I am going to be getting him a book set and am very interested in what others have suggested for books. He already has 2 Wimpy Kid books and LOVES them! Other items on his "wish list": A large remote-control monster truck and the Nerf Raider.
