What are the parents thinking?

A student I had two years ago, who is now in 6th grade, came up to me in the hallway today to proudly show off her brand new tongue ring. Yep, she's 11. What in the world are parents thinking to allow an 11 year old to get her tongue pierced? The worst part is, her teacher said that she spent the day today with her fingers in her mouth.

I guess some parents don't see it as a big deal. I'm not one of them!:scared1:

That's disgusting.

A girl I knew last year pierced the skin below her bottom lip, TWICE, because her mother wouldn't let her get it pierced.

... just kidding! ..right? :upsidedow

An 11 year old has no business having their tongue pierced. None.

No I'm really not kidding, I dont see what the problem is. I dont see why tongue piercing's are considered inappropriate.

At first I thought the same, but then I looked over at my 11 year old and thought no freakin' way

:lmao: when I was 11 I wanted a second hole in my ear and my grandmother thought that was inappropriate. Do tongue piercing's represent something I am missing?

I'm all for individuality and such...and I would rather my kids get piercings than tatoos...b/c you can change your mind about it later. Maybe a tatoo if they thought long and hard about it. But that would be at age 18.

More than anything, I'd be concerned about the health-safety aspect of that. I've got friends and family that have had to let piercings grow back because of infection.

Yes :rolleyes1 but I'm sure in an 11 year olds case its more about making a fashion statement. At least I hope so.

From what I understand tongue rings are for making certain grown up activities better for the receiver, so why would you give a child something like that

Maybe I am missing something I asked DH if DD could get a tongue ring at 11 and he said NO :lmao:

Why would a child get it for that purpose? I think it's more of a rebellious temporary phase...I still dont see anything wrong with it. I think if you are looking at an 11 year old and thinking she got it for that purpose, you are the one with the problems LOL

I think kids have more than enough ways of getting germs into their systems without parents allowing them to find new ones..

Yes, they do. It's not DIS-friendly but we'll leave it at this, it involves a sexual act. Why would a child get it at that age? You probably don't know half of the things kids do these days. I've seen kids in the 6th grade who are pregnant. Heck, one girl in my year had 2 abortions by the time she got to 7th/8th grade. :scared1: There is no such thing as innocence anymore. :sad2:
