What do you get through DVC that you dont get just booking at the restort yourself?

you still have to call ms to make a reservations.

the members is to pay in advance for vacations for next several years. that is all.

right now

$100 off annual pass
$125 off Premium annual pass (includes water park, PI, DQ)

some restuarant, shopping, entertainment, recreations, tours discounts

I'm trying to understand your question.
If you mean "what do you get out of membership in DVC that you don't get when just booking a room thru CRO?"
-prepaid vacations at a locked in price for the next 40-50 years

If you mean actual "perks", those change all the time but currently:
discounts on AP's
discounts on dining
DDP available without a package
discounts on recreation
discounts on entertainment
