As opposed to a tax return, what is a federal tax transcript?

If taxes have not been filed yet, is it possible to even get a tax transcript for 2011?

I have been to the IRS site and call me dense, but I don't know for sure if you have to file your taxes first to get a transcript.

I am pretty sure that is the way it works, I am just trying to confirm.
All this college stuff has me on pins & needles.

It depends. If you've made estimated payments, a tax transcript will show the payments. But it won't show the tax liability. You have to file your taxes in order to obtain a transcript which shows the taxes.

You may be able to get a transcript to show what you've made. But you already have your W2 forms. So that won't help you.

The IRS Tax Transcript gives line-by-line information as to what has been filed and processed. It also give information about all payments, adjustments, and refunds after the return has been filed.

But the 2011 information will not be there until the return has been filed and processed.
