What are "starter" pins?

I keep seeing this term and wondered just what exactly it means. I have collected a few Mickey pins and have seen them listed on ebay as "starter" pins. Are they less desirable (not to me...I just love the mouse!!)

Disney sells starter kits which include six pins (3 different ones) and a lanyard. The idea is to keep one of each and then trade the other three. They are good pins and a good way to get "started."
