What are pin numbers?

I have heard people talking about pin codes- what are they and how do you know if you have one. My friend was fuzzy on the details, but mentioned she heard about them on this board.

Disney sometimes sends out special deals on a postcard or e-mail. They have a
code # (pin #) on them that identifies you. If you give them the pin #, they will pull the record up and know it's you. This prevents you from handing the postcard or e-mail to someone else to use.

Sometimes if you call CRO and give them your name and address, they can check if an offer was sent out to you that maybe you did not receive and give you the pin #.
