What are my odds?

I have BWV points in holding, I need to use them by 1/31/09.
DH and I want to stay at VWL next Jan. checking in the 11th and departing the 15th. We need to use up those BWV points instead of our VWL points. Is it likely we'll be able to get a 1 bedroom at 7 months out
during those dates?

If they are Holding Account points, you can't make a reservation more than 60 days in advance.

Jan 11 is the full marathon. That's going to be very tough to get. Especially if you have to wait until 60 days out.

Make the reservation using your VWL points but don't borrow any. At 60 days out start calling day by day to get a NEW reservation using the holding account points. Once you've got what you need, cancel the existing reservation.

The only problem with this scenario is that if you DON"T get the reservation you will only have a couple of months to use the points or lose them. If you aren't set on VWL, you will probably be able to get something for Jan. 11 - 15 (maybe even VWL). Good luck!

They'd be no worse off than if they waited until 2 months out and tried to get a reservation. If some of the days were available but not others, they could use part of those points even if not all of them. They could even wait list other days in this situation and try to use more of the points. And they'd have a guaranteed reservation for when they want to go. For Jan, worst case scenario is they could likely get something at some resort.

There are other approaches they could take such as using them for CC or for a trip sooner if available. And to a degree it does depend somewhat on their UY. They might also ask MS to use their once a lifetime double secret banking exception.

I tried to swap out a reservation using a different set of points for the Sat and Sun of the marathon about three months out. Nothing was available. If they don't need the Sunday, they might be able to get something. But if they need the Sunday, they are going to be out of luck at 60 days out.

But even if they get some days and not others, they'll be way ahead using at least part of the points they might lose otherwise.
