Is it really that hard? when should I start trying?
do I have the choice of taking the reservation once it comes up?
or am I stuck with whatever I get once I make the request?

thanks !!

I think your chances are excellent for a trade to Cancun next year. I have a reservation at the Royal Carribean for next year in August. I began the exchange process a few months ago, and my trade came in within two weeks. I had them searching three of the Royal Resorts and I could have passed on this and opted to wait to see if another came through, but I decided this looked like a great resort and on the advice of the infamous "Dean" decided it would be a great trade. So, you do not have to commit to anything you don't want to. I'm pretty confident you could get it pretty easily though.

It depends on when you want to go. If you are looking for late spring, summer or fall; I doubt you'll have a problem. If you are looking for Xmas to Easter, big problem. You can place a request then when it comes through, they will give you a day or 2 to check air fare and decide. No harm done if you decide not to go so you have no risk in trying. The Royals are the only ones I'd take personally, even then, I'd leave out VCI for an even exchange. If you look at direct exchanges you might do better and even get by with less points and/or a better unit option.

Dean - what do you mean by "direct exchanges" and can you please explain how this might get you by using fewer points? (I am new to this!)

Also - when you say "no harm in trying" - I thought that you had to deposit your week or points to start a search and then you could not get them back once deposited, meaning that you had to use them for an exchange somewhere. Isn't that a risk when starting the exchange process?

Thanks for your help.

Direct exchange means finding an owner from the resort you want and striking up a deal, something you can easily do with DVC on Timeshare Users Group (TUG) . Frequently you can offer less than a week or a smaller unit. This gives you the flexibility of accepting a resort that fits your needs but isn't worth giving up the full points for.

Most DVC exchanges are request first. You tell them what and when you want and they look for it. They call you if they find and it you then get to say OK or NO. If you say no, you've lost nothing. You don't even have to save points for the exchange if you don't want to.

Thanks, Dean, for that helpful information. I did not realize that you could just make a request - I thought you had to deposit points. I have joined TUG based on recommendations I read here and I really love that site - great information. I would recommend anyone to join it if they are interested in timesharing.
