What am I allowed to take on the flight with me

Just wondering... I know you aren't allowed certain things on a plane because they could be a "weapon" , like finger nail clippers. So does anyone know, what about a pencil or a pen? My son asked for a maze book to take with him on a plane and of course it is hard to do a maze without a writing utensil.

Also, does anyone know how much liquid you are allowed to bring on or where I can check to find that out? We have a 120 ml bottle of sunscreen I would like to put on our carryon for when we arrive before our luggage gets to the hotel. Is this too big?

Nail clippers are fine now in carry on bags. Pens and pencils have always been okay.

For liquids you need to follow the 3-1-1 rules. The largest bottle of liquid in a carry-on bag can be 100ml or 3.4 ounces and they have to fit inside a 1 quart zip-top bag.

My assumption was that the OP was traveling to WDW so the flight would have to follow US rules. The Canadian rules can only be less stringent than the US rules for flights inside Canada. If you follow the US rules there won't be any surprises. The US site will also give you information on what you can take into the US.

sigh*. Just look at both sites. That way you're good to go at both ends of your trip. When in doubt, if the 2 sites differ at some point, go with the US TSA site, since you will be entering the US on your outbound flight.

Just wanted to mention that your 120 ml sunscreen is 20 ml over the limit for carryon liquid containers.

Personally, I'd risk it and just plan to pick up a new tube at destination if it gets confiscated. But you might want to pick up one of those tiny one-use sunscreen packets (you tear it open and there's no way to re-seal it) for your carryon, and pack the 120 ml container in checked baggage.

Actually, not true. Canadian rules are often stricter and both sets do change and with little notice. If Canada has stiffened a rule then you won't get on the out bound flight. We are an independent country after all and do set are own rules. Over the years I have seen both countries be more or less stringent.

If the flight originates in Canada read CATSA. If the return flight originates in US the also read TSA. Vice versa if you start in the US. But don't just assume the rules will be identical or one is more stringent than the other.

Thank you, I appreciate this as well as the American ones. I have to go from Halifax to Montreal and then on to Orlando and we go through Toronto coming home, so both will be useful.

For the pp who mentioned my 120 ml sunscreen, I was just hoping it would be small enough. I have a big bottle of sunscreen for each of us that is being packed. The small one came as a bonus with a 3 pack we bought, so I thought it would be perfect if it was small enough, although I had my doubts. I just wanted it for when we get there since we arrive at noon but who knows when the luggage will be delivered and we want to head out to the parks or dtd if we are not too tired.

With three kids who are a little high strung and have never been to Disney or on a plane, I'm not going to test the airport guards by taking a bottle of sunscreen a bit too big. Hmm, I wonder if they will let it pass if I take some out?!?! Never mind, like I said, not worth the hassle and possible problems.

They just go by the size of the bottle. Each person gets a 3-1-1 bag even the kids so you carry a fair amount of liquids. I would go with a couple of 100ml or less bottles in the carry-ons and a larger one in the check luggage.

It is true that the rules can be different but they won't vary in the big things like 3-1-1. I travel regularly but not frequently (if that makes sense) and I haven't noticed any differences that really mattered. It's quite possible the variation wouldn't be something that mattered to me.

We keep a handful of small Nalgene bottles; buy them at MEC if you are a member. Just fill them up from the larger bottle and bring them along in your plastic bag. They don't seem to care what the contents of the bottle are or if they are labelled, just as long as they are below the size limit. PS - I would not buy cheap dollar store bottles - sad experience has proven they are not durable enough for even light knocks.

I was wondering about putting it in a smaller bottle but wasn't sure about having it in the bottle with no label. Thanks.

If you have a 120ml bottle of sunscreen they will just make you dump 20ml of sunscreen into the garbage. My SIL had to do this with her conditioner. Just use it a few times before you go and you should be down under 100ml

Just stick the sunscreen in your checked bags. For couple hours that you are in Orlando without the sunscreen it's not going to be that big of a deal. Or if you really need it for those few hours just go to Walmart tonight and pick up a smaller bottle for your carry on.

I'd be careful with this one. I had a 150ml tube of cream confiscated even though it was almost empty. The word of the rule is that it is the size of the container, not the amount contained. Your SIL was lucky with the screener, but they aren't all that nice.

Sunscreen is always the biggest concern for us. Everything else can be packed and will eventually show up in your room (or can be bought when you get there). Neutrogena is about the only (quality) kids sunscreen we have been able to find in a travel size under 100ml (actually 88ml). It allows us to coat the kids when we get to the resort before heading out to the parks.

You would figure more companies would drop the size from the 120ml or so they are using by this point but they haven't. It isn't TSA/CATSA rules are changing anything soon.

Having travelled enough with work I have been caught behind a number of people in the security lines who just don't 'get it' and of course then feel the need to argue with security over the rules (not a wise move).

I found an 88 ml size. I am not familiar with the brand, but hopefully it will do for that first day. Like I said, each of us will have our own bottle of sunscreen in our luggage but since we are all quite fair, possibly spending the afternoon in the sun with no sunscreen is not an option.
