I will be in the Baltimore area at Christmas. Since I live on the west coast, and will be on the east coast, thought I would take a short trip to Orlando. What airlines fly out of that area? I looked at Southwest. Is there any other budget airline?

Thanks

Susan

RIght now you can cheap fares on almost any airline. IMHO, stay away from AirTran...just don't think they are very professional.

Use expedia or orbitz and get a sense of the price that all the airlines are offering for your dates. You can sidestep and it will compare for you. The biggest mistake people make booking airfare is that they assume that SW or the others will always be cheaper. My experience is that once SW comes to an airport, all the majors reduce fares.

Good luck.

I just booked a last minute flight on continental out of bwi to orlando (through cleveland) the rate was very good - $166 I think. (Good in my opinion, considering we leave in 3 weeks)

I have never flown out of BWI before (usually use dulles - IAD) but I've dropped friends off there before and it is a nice airport.

Southwest also flies out of BWI and i think they have flights to Orlando. They are usually pretty cheap.

Hope this helps!

Here's a link to the BWI airport site - www.bwiairport.com . Put your cursor on the Airlines and Schedules link and select Airlines. You should get a list of all the airlines that fly out of BWI, including discount airlines Airtran and Southwest.

I'm just curious but have you ever flown Airtran and what types of problems have you encountered? My family has flow Airtran and Southwest and will take Airtran anytime even if it means spending a little more. They were much more professional then Southwest has ever been. They definitely have it more together then the other airlines and customer service is great. We've had to cancel a flight for this month and they didn't even ding me with a penalty fee. Just put the entire amount as a credit on my account. When my son and husband flew them last October it only cost $125 non stop round trip to Orlando from BWI. They then upgraded to business class at the gate for only $30 a piece. I've gotten non stop from BWI using Airtrain and it was still much cheaper then a "direct flight" which makes at least one stop with SW. To the OP, go directly to Airtran.com and check out the rates when it comes time. As with other budget airlines, they don't release rates too far in advance. Also Airtran's fleet is almost 98% new. They don't fly older planes like a lot of other airlines. I certainly would consider them for you trip. We won't use anyone else.

The only two budget airlines that fly non-stop between Baltimore and Orlando are Southwest and AirTran.

I am curious to know what is meant by professionalism in the airline industry. I fly Southwest all the time and find them to be friendly and more likely than not on time. They do not impose fees for changing your reservations.

I have a friend who flies both Southwest and AirTran frequently and has no problems with either.

Thanks for your replys(or is that replies?). I didn't even know Pam Am was still around. I can start hunting for the best fare now.

By the way, I love the Wash DC area. My family lives in Annapolis. What a wonderful town. I just get confused when people say Washington. I think they're talking about my state!!

Thanks again

Susan

Well, first you should know that I am a very frequent flyer. I am on a plane at least a couple of days per week. I generally fly US Airways or United, although occasionally I fly SW into BWI. I don't really like either SW or AirTran, but between them, I prefer SW. When I fly for business, SW is nice as their pricing is logical. But I will not fly them for leisure from here bc there are too many stops and too much waiting in line at the connection point. I simply do not understand why they cannot give you your boarding group when you check in for your first flight.

Having said that, none of the airlines are great, really. Every traveler has his/her preferences. The budget airlines offer a very viable alternative to the "majors" - and currently only SW is profitable, I think. My experience with AirTran is from awhile ago, and I formed a very bad opinion of it, so I won't fly them again.

For the OP, Delta's new low-cost carrier called Song is going to fly from DC soon, so you may want to check them out.
