What about the "vaulted" DVDs?

Can you find the "gone back to the vault" DVD animated features (like Peter Pan, specifically) in any of the gift shops at DL? --Would really hate to shop for these off of Amazon, ebay, etc.

If they are available at DL, how much are they?

Thanks! pirate:

I have looked for the unavailable or otherwise "vaulted" videos in the parks with no luck.

I ended up buying my copy of Peter Pan off of Amazon.com.

Good luck in your search!

You might sometimes find them in obscure music stores that have small DVD sections. They may have been sitting on the shelf for years. Every now and again, I run across one.

Is there a list somewhere of disney movies that are in the vault?

You may be able to get a reasonable price on ebay. I got a backup (yes, I felt I needed a backup) from ebay that came from Hong Kong. 30 bucks including shipping. Not too bad.

I also bought Peter Pan off ebay with great success (14.99 plus shipping). It was sealed and still had all the inside info, sleeves. Just make sure you shop around. My DD is only 2 so I am not looking for Beauty and the Beast just yet...although I have priced it and it is EXPENSIVE!! I think I saw it on ebay/amazon for over $60. I recently bought several of the Cinderella DVDs and plan to hold on to them until it goes "back into the vault", wait a few years, then sell them on ebay. I don't sell anything else on ebay but decided that all those crazy moms like me will be looking for Cinderella in a few year and will be willing to pay a little more for it.

Beauty and the Beast is fairly easy to come by on eBay. In fact, one auction closing now for a new condition DVD for $11.

Any idea of when Beauty & the Beast would come out of the vault with all the big treatment/marketing that Cinderella had last year & The Little Mermaid is having this year?

I doubt Beauty and the Beast will get a big treatment for quite a long time. It was a fairly big package when it was originally released on DVD. They put in a few scenes that were originally in the Broadway production, etc. It was a nice 2-disc set. You can probably find it on ebay.

Beauty & Beast had a huge re-release in 2003, so I don't think they'll do it again for quite awhile.

These Platinum editions are fairly new. From recent memory, and I could be off by a year:

The first Platinum edition was Snow White 2002
Beauty and Beast 2003
The Lion King 2004
Cinderella 2005
The Little Mermaid 2006

The "Big" releases are slated for Oct of each year, with secondary ones in the Spring (i.e. Lady and the Tramp last season).

I suspect Disney is going through their catalogue and re-vamping the DVDs to make them "platinum" and it'll be awhile before they re-cycle again.

What I don't understand is the marketing of the Little Mermaid as "never before on DVD". I have a DVD from when my DD was one -- 6 years ago. It's stripped -- no "extras". But, it was an official Disney release sent to me for free with diaper coupons or such :confused3

What is says is "First time on 2 Disc DVD" That is the distinction that it has "2 discs" when you buy it not just one.

I figured. The CM at my local Disney Store basically told me I was lying when I said I already had it on DVD. (She was trying to pre-sell this new release.) Even my DD6 was telling her we had it. :confused3

Yep, that's the one I have--I don't remember there being as much marketing (toys, happy meals, etc.) with that one as with the recent ones. I just wanted more Belle stuff:)
Thanks!

I have the exact same DVD, so no, you were not lying or imagining anything or anything like that.
It annoys me when some employees will argue about things. Just because they were hired to work for Disney in some capacity (which, Disney Store isn't even owned by Disney anymore anyway) doesn't mean they're experts.

Also, to answers someone else's question. I had the understanding that the Platinums came out...I think it's every ten years. It was actually a very similar situation back when movies were only on VHS, but back then I'm pretty sure it was every seven years. I think it's just more now because they've added more that they consider "platinum" and will just be going through rotation. Does that make any sense?

Oh, and also, sometimes I find vaulted movies on Walmart.com or at Best Buy. They'll be a little more expensive than their original prices, but they're never anything crazy like $60.

The 'Platinum' is nothing but a marketing gimmick without a real timetable. Their release dates are set to maintain quarterly earnings, nothing else. In fact, there's nothing really in these releases expect running the negative through another digitizer. It's not like the eariler releases that had new segments and additional material written for them. In fact, the rumor is the upcoming 'Platinum' release of Lilo and Stitch is going to nothing but the extras they dropped when they cut the first release from one disc to two.

The big project at the moment is getting the films ready for thier release on High Def. They want to finish the cycle through all the "biggies" before they release them again on Blu-Ray.
