Are the tracks out?

If not, couldn't the railroad be used for evacuations & to get supplies into NO?

Even if they are out now, couldn't trains have been used to help with evacuation?

There were several reports about how the train tracks throughout the region were damaged by the storm.

For example:
Gary Sease, a CSX Corp. spokesman, said his railroad is trying to track down 300 employees working in New Orleans. The railroad operates 22,000 miles of track in the eastern United States... It has lost the tracks between New Orleans and Pascagoula, Miss., Sease said. ...
CSX is focused on rebuilding its tracks, he said, but is also working on a plan that will allow it to operate for months without using New Orleans.

The tracks would have been damaged the same way the roads were.

I don't know if it was an error in reporting--but they had said a train was en route to Texas with refugees I thought.
