What about hats??

To keep the sun off our faces my husband and I wear soft light fabric hats with an approx 4 inch fairly-stiff brim around the whole hat, and a cord you can fasten under your chin if it's windy.

That type of hat protects much more of your face and neck than a baseball cap does. It's also much easier than wearing a straw hat, because you can just remove it when you board fast rides and sit on it (so as not to lose it). It actually flattens completely and is good as new again when you're ready to put it back on.

We bought them at an REI sports store. I'll see if I can find some photos.

I LOVE that movie, but don't remember that line. I'll have to watch for it next time....

The baby one actually isnt just for babys. It looks like the hat I got in the parks thatis squishable but it says magic kingdom on the front and has the main characters signatures on it all around it. It is an adult hat and I love it. i also wear WDW visors and a totes all weather hat for those rainy afternoons. (from sears)

Oh yeah, I just meant the one that was on the little one. I'd love it for me for sure. It looks very light...

And I'll be checking out all the others mentioned too.

Along with all the other things to do while I'm in Disney, I'll also be looking at peoples bags and shoes and hats too now.

Anyway, 3 weeks ago, I just had a small bump biopsied from my forehead and, yes, it was basal cell carcinoma i.e. skin cancer---fortunately, the "mildest" version. You can bet that this year, I'm really going to wear a hat!!!

Oh that's too bad! Thank goodness it's the milder version, but still a big scare for you I'm sure.

And yes, more the reason for a hat. I'm not good with visors either because they need to be alittle snug to stay put and I hate the snug feeling. Reminds me too much of a headache. And then there's still the scalp burn problem.

Good luck on your hat search. I'm seeing a lot of nice wide brimmed hats out there. And I sincerely hope your problem is taken care of!

I used to always get ill from the sun and heat at theme parks, but I decided a few years ago that living with that was a waste of money and a drain on my family's fun, so I decided to Take Steps. I implemented a really serious sun-protection plan for myself, and the hat is part of it. Now I don't waste any of my precious park time being sick because of heat or sun. I can even ride rides that once tended to make me nauseous, because I'm feeling much healthier when I walk on.

Just style your hair in a way that takes the hat into consideration, and then forget about it. Disney is not about looking good--it's about having fun, and you won't have fun if you are uncomfortable.

I always wear a hat. I hate what the sun does to my scalp otherwise, and to my energy levels. I never wear a hat anywhere but Florida, but I think it's a must.

I was also diagnosed with basal cell about 3 weeks ago and had it removed two days ago. It was on my face about an inch below my eye. We are going to WDW in May so I will definitely be wearing a hat. I plan on starting a new hobby - collecting hats!

Great input everyone! Certainly smart in many ways to wear a hat, I can see that. Sorry to hear another cancer scare Dibey. I'm sure now a hat will be on my head! I agree I'll be much happier too. Ugly shoes and hat head and happy is way better than pretty and crabby.

I'll probably keep shopping for one more, but I went to the local department store yesterday and got a Liz Claiborne packable hat with a wide brim in light brown. It's soft and comfortable and not overly fancy-looking. It was on sale for about $20.00. I really like it. Thanks everyone very much for your assistance!

(Another thing I'm learning; how much it costs to go to Disney even before you leave! Especially when you know about the DIS ; )

Well, obviously she doesn't, at this point, wear a hat. So posting, "I don't wear a hat" is not helpful at all to the OP!

The people who posted what sort of headgear they did wear, they were helpful!

It's not 'nice' or 'not nice'.

And to the OP, don't worry about being able to carry off a cowboy hat-I feel totally stupid wearing mine in the 'normal world' and it sits on the shelf, but Disney is the epicenter of crazy hat wearin' people, and I feel totally at home with it there...

Well, actually on the Crocs website, they do have "Croc Hats" listed. I haven't looked closely at them, so don't know if they are made from the same type of material or not. Surely not!!

As to the hat question, I look like a complete dork with any kind of a hat on. I've tried cute hats, but feel like I'm drawing more attention to myself, so I just wear a baseball cap any time I plan on being in the sun for any length of time. My scalp gets so burnt, and there is nothing worse than a scalp peeling and looking like you have a severe case of dandruff. I've tried getting by without the cap and putting sunscreen on my scalp, but then my hair just ends up looking oily or gummy. So, dorky looking or not, I will keep wearing my baseball cap.

During the day I often sport a baseball cap-its khaki with mickey on the front and since I wear khaki shorts like every day of the trip it matches everything. I dont usually wear a hat at night.

My heart goes out to both of you, but good for you for going in to get it checked out before it got too bad. Can I ask a sincere question though? What does it look like? i.e. How did you know to ask about it? My family is all fair skinned and I always wonder that.

I will be sure to take along hats for all of us.

I was in line behind a 40 ish guy who had on a birthday cake hat, complete with candles, on his head. They had to ask him to take it off during Star Tours, it was so tall. I seriously wanted to take a picture, it was so over the top! And he was happy as a clam , he was in Disney for his birthday, his bald head was protected, and all was well with the world!
