Okay, so this is my very first trip (or rather Pre-trip) report, ever! First some background info on me. Hi, my name is Roger, I’m 41 years young. I’ve been married for 21 years to my wonderful wife Pam  . We have two kids, a daughter, Courtney princess: who just turned 21 in June, and a son, Ryan pirate: who is now 18 and about to leave home for college.

We went to WDW last July and almost immediately started planning for this years trip…..wait, hold on, let’s go back to the very beginning of my WDW experience and then we can work our way to this years trip.

I first went to WDW back in the mid 1970’s :hippie: . I believe I was either eight or nine. I know I was in 3rd grade at the time. Back then there were only two Disney parks in the entire world, Walt Disney Land in California, and Walt Disney World in Florida which is of course what we now call the Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately I remember almost nothing about that trip. I know we stayed in Largo, Florida with my grandmother and drove to WDW for the day. I remember more about the car trip from Avon, Mass to Florida in a station wagon :drive: with my father, step mother, and 7 kids :scared1: (yes, that’s right I said 7)! :crowded: The kids were I, my three sisters, two step brothers and one step sister. Anyways, like I said, I can’t really remember too much about that trip.

We went back to the sunshine state in April of 1981 when I was a freshman at Winnacunnet High School in Hampton, N.H. This time, however my dad had an RV so we drove down in relative comfort. We had even more room because one of my sisters’s stayed behind as did my step sister. We again went to Largo to visit relatives. When we went to WDW we got a two day pass which we wore on a rope around our necks which allowed us to go on every ride without purchasing additional tickets. At least that’s how I remember it. Maybe the day passes were all that was sold at the time,:confused3 I’m not positive but I do clearly remember we got the two day pass.

Anyway, we spent a whole day at Disney, and then we came back the following evening and spent several hours there. We had a great time. :cloud9: One of my stepbrothers got separated from the “group” and we spent a considerable amount of time tracking him down. LOL :rotfl:
The thing that was troublesome was that a few days prior to going to Disney, I had gotten what is still the worst sun burn of my entire life! :scared1: Ouch it hurts just thinking about it! I even had to take vinegar sponge baths on advice of the locals to try to deal with it. Well wouldn’t you know, as I’m walking around the magic kingdom, my face starts peeling. First it started to look like I was an old man with wrinkles around my eyes, and then the skin just started to peel away. Gross, huh?
Also at this time Disney now had three parks in the world, Disneyland, Disneyworld, and Tokyo Disney. But as we are driving around the WDW area there are all these signs advertising a new park called E.P.C.O.T. Hmm, I wondered, what the heck is that?;)

So Twenty years later, (yes 20 YEARS) I finally got a chance to go back to WDW! More on that next time!

Okay, so fast forward from 1981 to March of 2001:hourglass . It’s our 15th anniversary! :cool1: My sister and her family were taking a trip to WDW and talked us into going down. Now we couldn’t afford to spend a week down in Florida, so me and DW went down for a couple of days, by ourselves, no kids ( and by the way, they weren’t happy about us leaving them home, and I can’t blame them, but it was our anniversary and we wanted some alone time). We stayed at a Days Inn, not exactly deluxe accommodations, but we were trying to do this on the cheap. Our first day there we went to EPCOT, that mysterious park that they were still building the last time I went to WDW. It was great, the weather was absolutely gorgeous. We loved Honey I shrunk the audience, Ellen’s Energy adventure (although, don’t you think that the animatronics Ellen is the worst looking one on all of WDW property? If I was Ellen I’d be pretty upset that it looks so bad) and all the countries around the world showcase were awesome. (TT was closed, being rehabbed in the off season) We had gone to the park with my sister and BIL; they had actually picked us up at the hotel and drove us to the park:car: . For what ever reason, BIL was in a lousy mood, especially towards the end of the day. We figured we may be the reason, so we kept trying to make excuses to go our own way and meet up with them later, but my sister wouldn’t let us go anywhere with out them, UGH! Anyway, we ate at the restaurant in Italy, Alfredo’s. It was great; we had a really great meal there. Unfortunately BIL didn’t want to stay to watch Illuminations, so we had to miss it. Before we left we told my sister and BIL that we’d meet them at the Magic Kingdom the next morning that we’d take the shuttle bus from the hotel. BIL seemed to really like that idea!
So the next morning we met up with them at the entrance to MK and went straight to Splash Mountain. Our very first trip through Splash! :goodvibes It was awesome! I love Splash Mountain! We spent the rest of the day at MK and had a great time. The last day of our trip we went to Universal studios, just DW and I and had a great time.

Several months later, well we all know what happened in September of 2001. At the beginning of November we had our own tragedy when our house was destroyed in a fire. The fire was in the kitchen and destroyed the kitchen and bathroom. We lost two pets, our dog Hunter, who I still miss, and one of our two cats. The cat that survived was down in the basement and was able to keep out of the smoke. Now the fire itself didn’t burn the house down, but the smoke damaged destroyed ALL of our possessions. The shock of all of this is kind of like suffering a death in the family, at least initially. Thank God for insurance, we were able to rebuild the house and replace all of our stuff but it was a scary time in our lives, one that we will never forget that’s for sure. In December of that year, my 92 year old grandmother, who lived in Largo, FL was involved in a car accident (she was a passenger) and she passed away in the week between Christmas and New Years. What a lousy few months this has been for my family! One of the lowest points of my entire life!
But some good news, the house is rebuilt, and we moved back in on March 1st 2002, on our wedding anniversary! And we have enough insurance money left over to take the four of us, me, DW, DD, and DS on a trip to WDW. That’s just what we did along with my DW’s brother, SIL and a niece and nephew, during the week of July 4th 2002.
More on that next time!

Are you taking your kids this time?
We also have two in college this fall. Our youngest is starting freshman year and our daughter will be a senior.
Our anniversary is in September. Since the kids have been in grade school, we haven't been able to go for more than a weekend trip to celebrate on the date.
This year we are going sans kids for 9 days. Woohoo!
Food and Wine Festival here we come.

Hi Deb!
My Son will also be a freshman this fall and my daughter is starting her senior year as well!

Yes, they are going this time as well but my wife and I decided to take a weekend trip the last weekend of November, all by ourselves!:cool1: I wish it was 9 nine days...I'm so jealous!
We figured, they'll both be in school and we could use the alone time....plus we'll get to see the newly redone haunted mansion and spaceship earth!:yay:

Okay, so we decided to use some of the insurance money from the fire to go to WDW. This was the first time the kids had ever gone to WDW. We stayed off site, renting a condo from someone from DW’s work. Now this was July of 2002 and unfortunately tourism had yet to recover from the 9/11 attacks. This meant that while the parks were bustling, they were a far cry from the crowds that you would typically see in Orlando at that time of year. DD was 16 at the time and DS was 13. DW is a chicken when it comes to rides, plus she has a really bad back and had just had back surgery right before the house fire, so she will only go on a handful of rides. Me, on the other hand, I love ALL the rides and now I had the kids to ride with me. Unfortunately, DS decided he was afraid of practically all the rides. Thank goodness, DD went on everything with me! I did feel guilty because she really didn’t want to go on RnR but I made her go one with me….She screamed so loud and so much, I felt really bad. I think it was the only ride that truly scared her. To tell the truth, it scared me too! But we did all the parks, along with DW’s brother, his wife and their two kids. We did Chef Mickey’s for the first time, having breakfast there on the 4th of July.

Ironically, we would once again eat breakfast there on July 4th, four years later. We did all the parks and even did Typhoon lagoon one day. It was fun, it wasn’t so hot that you couldn’t stand it, and the parks were not as crowded as we found them to be on our next visit.

So all in all we had a great time. Four years later we found ourselves back at the parks, but more on that next time, then I can FINALLY get to what we’re planning this year!

:cool1: :thumbsup2 I will be in the "parents paying for college" club in just one short year! And I will also have a 9year old and another one headed for college in 2011! So I feel your pain. But I vow to still take my trips to disney, somehow, someway! Lookingforward to your trip report!:)

 Hi! The best advice I can give you is just grin and bear it! It is one of the most exciting times in your childs life, and one of the scariest for us parents:scared: We have to find a way to cheer on our kids:cheer2: and find a way to pay for it all:duck: Good luck with your kids, and have fun on all those trips to Disney:woohoo:

Thanks for reading my TR!!

HI! The pictures are wonder ful and I am looking forward to reading more.:thumbsup2 I will have three in college at the same time...:scared1:

Okay, so we decided after, four long years to finally come back to WDW! :cool1:
Now every other time we’ve ever gone to Disney, we stayed off site. To be honest with you, I never even realized that staying on site was an option, money wise that is. I always figured it would be too expensive:scared1: (and let’s face it, it’s not cheap) but two things happened. First I discovered the Walt Disney World web site. :surfweb: Now, I know that as web sites go, it’s pretty crappy. It isn’t exactly designed to be user friendly, and trying to find information that you want is very time consuming. That said the thing that sold me on the web site was the payment options. With $200 down, I was able to make a reservation and then pay over time over the internet. Suddenly, a trip to Disney, staying on site seemed doable, as long as I didn’t have to cough up the cash all at once. The second thing was we bought the book, The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. This book had so much information about WDW! Thru the book, we learned about the differences in the hotels, the different park tickets, the meal plan, which I didn’t know existed, as well as Magical Express, and on, and on. The book also has a list of all the most popular web sites to get information from. As you can guess, one of those sites listed was the DIS! (Page 26 in the 2006 version of the book). :disrocks: This site, along with Deb Will’s site put our trip planning on a whole different level. Very soon, planning the trip became an obsession! One that I’m still not over! So for our 2006 trip, the cast of characters was going to be a little different. It was still me, DW, DD, and DS but this time we were taking my mother in law (DMIL---and D means Dear, not the other D word one might use when describing their mother in law) as well as one of DW’s 30 something cousin.
proxy2_edited.jpg

So this presented us with a problem. We had booked a room at the All Star Music (Asmu) for the four of us already. This meant my first call to Disney to modify our reservations. We added a second room, with my DD, DMIL and cousin, while I, DW, and DS were in the other room. Before long it was time to make dinner reservations, but wait, hadn’t I read in that book, something about a dining plan? So I looked into it, and wow what a deal! I again called Disney and added the dining plan! We ended up making reservations, at Chef Mickey’s for breakfast on July 4th. We made ressies for Le Cellier, Mama Melrose’s (for the fantasmic package), Liberty Tree tavern, and the Crystal Palace. Let me tell you we absolutely loved Le Cellier, and Mama Melrose’s and the Liberty tree Tavern.
Chef Mickey’s was okay, not great, very noisy and the food was so-so.

But we absolutely hated Crystal Palace. The restaurant was beautiful, but very noisy, and the food was awful. I’ve read a lot of reviews where people love this restaurant, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt and thinking this just happened to be an off night for the place. The characters, all from Winnie the Pooh were great too. By the way, we loved the dining plan. We ate more than I thought possible, but you are on the move so much there that we must have burned off all those calories touring the parks. It was also our first experience with Disney’s magical express, which we loved.
PictureorVideo013.jpg

Now let me tell you what happen with Fantasmic. As I mentioned, we booked the fantasmic package, which means you pay for a meal at a certain restaurant (we picked MM) and you are given seats in a reserved section of the Fantasmic stadium. It rained everyday we were there in the afternoon, just a passing summer shower, no big deal. Wouldn’t you know it, the night we are to see Fantasmic, it starts raining cats and dogs, and that evening’s showings are cancelled.
So we never got to experience Fantasmic.:(
Besides that bump in the road the trip was fantastic. It was so much fun bring my DMIL to Florida for the very first time, and being able to see her have so much fun going on all the rides, with the exception of ToT, RnR, EE, and Space Mountain. She had so much fun that when she found out we were going again this year she asked to come along again too! More on that drama next time!

:wizard: Roger

Roger,

You sound like a very generous and loving dad, husband and inlaw!
Looking forward to more.
