Booked our flights for Feb and ended up booking a direct (don't ask how much..way more then I wanted to) for Halifax to MCO via WestJet. Usually I travel via one of the American Carriers with our first stop being in the States so we've always precleared customs in Halifax. The only time I've traveled on a Canadian airline we've cleared in Toronto on a stopover.

Does a WestJet direct flight preclear in Halifax or will we have to go through customs in Orlando? And if so how does that work with DME?

It has nothing to do with which airline you are flying on. It just depends on whether your airport has the US Customs preclearance available. Not all Canadian airports do.

Not all Canadian airports do.

And those that do, only have certain hours that they are open for. For example, we were very fond of United's 11:55 PM overnight flight from YEG connecting in IAH and on to MCO because it got us to the resort around 10 AM. US Customs were not open at that hour so we always had to clear Customs in Houston, sometimes sitting on the plane until they were open. Sadly, I haven't seen that late night flight on the schedule for over a year now.
