After visiting St John on a day trip while cruising on DCL a few years back, I decided I definitely want to return there for a vacation! If I want to use DVC points for this resort (Interval), how far in advance do I put the request in and how likely is it that I will get it? I'm not planning on going for a few years but want to make a note in my planner well in advance to try to get reservations! I have also never used any of the exchange options so am a novice on this front - bear with me :)

Also, are 1 and 2 BR's the only types of units available with points? I know they have 3BR villas, but would I be able to secure one using extra points? If not, could I reserve more than one unit if I have enough points?

I did do a little research on the DVC website before posting this and if I'm reading it correctly a 1-week stay there is about 250 points for a 2BR in mid-season...is this correct? Thanks for any help and/or advice!

Put in at least a year out but don't expect a match to around 6 months or less. Your chances vary when when you can travel. If you're limited to school vacations or plan to go during the truly peak time, your chances are pretty slim. Not quite as low for some other times esp May and Sept. It's high season for DVC exchanges year round, that should give you an idea. II does indeed list 3 BR units and efficiencies. If your talking about the points exchange grid, it is not inclusive. There is a list of points required for the three DVC seasons for studios and 3 BR units as well. I can give you the points required later tonight, just post back if you need them. Remember the 2 BR only sleep 6 and the 3 BR only 8.

Dean,

Thanks :) If it isn't too much trouble I'd love to know the points for 2 and 3 BR's. Also, I did some searching on tripadvisor last night and many of the reviews are horrible. Have you stayed at the Westin? What do you think?

Also, I get e-mail updates from redweek on that property for individual rentals...do you think these are more cost effective than using DVC points?

Thnaks again for your vast knowledge and willingness to help!

I have stayed at the Westin (in the hotel not the timeshare section) once and on St. John a few times. I didn't like the timeshare section at all. It is located across a road and the 2BR units are up on a hill. They are a pretty good distance from the beach (which isn't that good either, especially compared to some of the other beaches on St. John) and all of the other amenities at the hotel. The beach is part of a pretty big harbor with lots of boats in it, so the water isn't exactly what you picture as Virgin Islands type water.

I haven't stayed there. The timeshare tend to be up the hill and quite a walk. I do have an acquaintance who owns there. I know person one owns Atlantis and the other St. John, I'll have to check which is which when I see them. You may find This Thread useful. The points are:
  1. Studio - 106 Low/123 Mid/134 High
  2. 1 BR - 124 Low/144 Mid/160 High
  3. 2 BR - 207 Low/252 Mid/270 High
  4. 3 BR - 276 Low/317 Mid/349 High
Cash rentals may not be any better for Westin but it likely depends on the time of the year. In general I like using multiple modalities until I find the one that fits best. So you may want to put in for an exchange while looking at other options including cash rentals.

We have stayed at the Westin in both the hotel section and the timeshare section. We had a waterfront room where you just had to open your balcony door to be on the beach and then we moved to their studio which is across the street and up on a hill. We loved the Westin!
True the beach is certainly not as nice as some of the many beaches on St. John's but the resort is very nice and it offers many ammenities. When the pool had no chairs available, it was nice to be able to sit on the beach.
There is a shuttle that runs throughout the resort, so if you don't want to walk there is always that option. The rates there are $250+ (for a studio)even in the summer so an exchange is a good deal. We put in for a studio for the summer of 2007 and are hoping that it comes through.

Thanks Dean for the specifics..I will definitely give this all some thought. And thanks to everyone for their input!
