Hi,
My wife ask me to post this.............

We are going on the Western Cruise, and she heard that you can get PURE Vanilla cheap???

Can anyone tell me if this is true, and the cost, and where we can get it?

Thanks......

In Cozumel - It is everywhere - I don't know the price as I did not purchase any - But I am sure someone here knows!

At the end of the pier look to you right and the 2 story shop is where I bought vanilla. I paid about $ 10.00 per liter, that is a great price and the vanilla is fantastic. You might get it cheaper some where else but I can say that the vanilla I bought there is worth the money. I only have 1 liter left and we are doing the easter this year.. I may have to start rationing the vanilla so it will last...

Bye, Kim

I saw on another board that if your ship docks at International Pier, there is a store once you enter and start hitting the shops on the left side next to the pharmacy that sells vanilla. They said that it cost $5 for 16 oz. bottle.

Don't know if this is the same store that Kim mentioned but thought I might as well pass it along.

Hope that helps!

You can find a variety of sizes in bottles. The price was very inexpensive. I didn't buy as much as I should have. When I got home evreyone wanted some.

One thought: I wasn't sure if I was buying the right thing because it was displayed with the bottles of liquor. The ingredients listed "alcohol" so I was a little leary. I asked a local who was shopping and he said that those were the bottles of vanilla they used for flavoring. I later took a herb class at my local nursery and learned that alcohol is used to extract the flavor from the plant. Who knew?

I will stock up this time and will bring something to pack them in for the trip home.

yes, cozumel would be the best place for cheap pure vanilla.

if you go to a "real" grocery store in Cozumel it is $2 a liter!!!!! The only problem is that it is several blocks from the dock. We got a taxi to take us, the driver even went in to translate for us! I bought 9 bottles as gifts for friends back home!

Sally at Cozumel Mini-golf can give directions to the San Francisco store.

It showed my kids there is a completely different Cozumel blocks away from the ship. They take American money and the vanillia is about twice as strong as the stuff we get here. We bought four litres kept one that I'll probably have for the next ten years.

When we were in Cozumel..we asked one of the bartenders where to go for vanilla..turns out..there was a grocery store only two blocks further down the road. She said..pick up your tequila in there also..it will be cheaper.

We were in the forum shops at that point...the Havana cigar store/restaurant..(2nd floor). The bar was open..had to have mojitos..lol. 1st floor is a diamonds international..where you redeem your coupons from the ship for the free tanzanite earrings and the free diamond earrings..so we were going there anyway..lol.

Anyway..if you exit..go to your right..walk a couple blocks..there is a grocery store..Sedano. Very nice people...fun to walk through.

Enjoy!

Don't know about real vanilla, but the vanilla rum we got in St. Thomas was cheap, and AWESOME!!!!;)

I do a tremendous amount of baking every Christmas season, (I begin the day after Thanksgiving!) and used the entire bottle I bought in Cozumel two weeks before Christmas. I later found an international market close to my neighborhood which sold the same bottle for about 5 times the cost I paid.

I'll know next time we do the Western to buy at least 5 bottles!
