Okay, so as you may or may not know, I am getting married July next year, but we can't honeymoon until the following year...

So I want to know your tips, must dos, all and any advice you have for this WC newbie!
I'd like to do Vegas and Cali (and then ideally a week in Hawaii hehe!)

Thanks in advance!
Steffi xx

So exciting!!

My tips for Vegas:

Stay up the north end of the strip. I've advised a few people of that since my trip and they were all grateful. (We stayed at TI, friends too and some at the Venetian and my mum at the Wynn Encore) the southern end seems a bit seedier or something.

Do a Grand Canyon helicopter flight. We went with Sundance and they are amazing. Landed in the Canyon for champagne lunch.

Is Cali all of Cali or just the South?

I don't have any advice sorry as I haven't been. I'd so love to do a west coast trip, how exciting!

I think just Southern Cali - we're probably looking at about 1 1/2 to 2 weeks there and then a week in Hawaii tagged on the end.

Helicopter Grand Canyon tour - Tom loves flying so I think this is a winner :-)

If I could, I would, but I think this trip will already be way too expensive as it is! I've looked at places in Hawaii for this July, and for a week all-inclusive it's already £1500 (although that's 'direct' flights to/from Hilo/London)

Vegas is my second fav place after orlando and we've been many times, we usually go for around 5 days a trip and find this the right amount of time, last year we drove to the Canyon and it was well worth the trip and will definitly do it this way again in the future when we take the in-laws.

Stay mid stip and you can't go wrong really, search web sites that have codes for hotels like fatwallet.com we've always had really good deals, we've stayed at flamingo, harrahs, ballys for like £40 a night, last year we stayed at the Bellagio for £95 a night.
San Diego is worth a visit for a few days, also hollywood for a night or two.

We flew to Hawaii (Oahu) for a week from LAX with Delta I think it was, I wouldn't go all inclusive to be honest, you want to be out about, get a car and travel around at your own pace and find some great deserted beaches.

How exciting Steffi! No advice here either unfortunately but excited to read this thread as we want to do CA including DLR for our honeymoon too

While in Vegas, try a Cirque du Soleil show. They are all marvellous but my favourite was 'O'. Not been to Vegas for years, but it is a gobsmacking place, defies all logic and reason but I loved it.

Pam

Yes! DEFINITE about Cirque!

We wanted to see O but left it too late - saw KA instead and it was AMAZING! ;)

I actually say now that if we wen back to LV we'd see a show every night.

Ah okay, thankyou for the tip RE all inclusive. To be honest, we just figured it would be easier, but I will definately look into it a bit more!

Yep, I think DLR is on the table without a doubt, and possibly Universal too :-)

I must look into some shows then :-)

Thanks guys! Xx

We went to Vegas last March and, while I liked it, I didn't love it. Mainly because, as non-smokers, the smoking really bothered us. It is everywhere!

Some of our highlights, though, were:

Gorgeous suite with wraparound balcony at The Cosmopolitan hotel - fantastic views of the strip but the room was so loud, we didn't sleep for 3 nights

The Venetian - stunningly beautiful hotel and so, so quiet where our room was

Hoover Dam - just amazing!

Grand Canyon - DH probably liked it more than me but it was well worth the expense (we did a day trip by plane) and something you have to see

Terry Fator - the man is a genius

The Beatles Love by C de S - we really enjoyed this but we are massive fans of the Beatles' music. If I were to go back, I would probably try to see another C de S show though

As far as food, there are so many fabulous places to eat but, in particular, we liked:

Sugar Factory - great cocktails and massive ice-cream sundaes
Grand Lux Café - the steak was wonderful and pretty extensive menu
Serendipity - loved the frozen hot chocolate

Feel free to ask if you want any more info.

Tink,
We did what you are planning last October. The essential guide book is California Road Trip from Moon Handbooks.

We flew into and out of LAX, you pay a premium to fly into Vegas, for us it would have been around GBP 100 extra for Vegas over LAX or SF.
Vegas we can take of leave, we stayed in a junior suite in the Elara which is next door to Paris, Paris and opposite the Bellagio. Very nice, modern, swish , comfortable but a bit soulless. Vegas as Mrs Stoat described it is a bit like Blackpool with extra alcohol and gambling, seriousley, people walking down the street at 10 am with extra large beers or jiant cocktails. If you do not like the smell of tobacco smoke Vegas is not for you, the smell is all pervasive in the Casino Hotels.
Having said that, go see a show, we did Cirque, and the buffet at the Bellagio is stunning, the TI buffet less so. We renewed our vows in a helicopter over the Strip at Night and also did the bus trip to see the Grand Canyon which was a good day out, saves a lot of driving.

LA traffic is the nightmare you would expect. You need satnav, the roads are not as well signed as they are in Florida. If you are out in Annaheim, it is around half an hour by car from the airport. Nose to tail 60mph traffic. My advice is book a taxi transfer in advance, then pick up your car later if you are doing that option. Disney is expensive for a one day ticket for both parks. You might want to consider Knotts Berry Farm as an alternative.

The california coastline north to SF is just stunning I would take two or more days and break your journey as there is so much to see and do. Do not miss Hearst Castle, views and the place itself are stunning. Monterey is a nice place and the aquarium is the best I have visited.

SF was more to our taste than LA. Look into the SF city pass, that includes Metro and bus transport, the DeJong museum, exploratorium, Monterey or SF Aquarium, and you can upgrade it to give an Alcatraz trip (well worth it).

From there you can drive over to Yosemite which is just stunning. We spent two full days there before heading over the Tioga pass (also stunning) before spending a night in Mammoth Lakes and visiting Bodie ghost town and Mono Lake. That puts you near Death Valley, stay out of here if it is summer, it is baking hot. In the cooler months it is amazing, bleak but compelling. We stayed at the Furnace Creek Ranch. You can get deals online for around $125 a room avoiding weekends as opposed to the $325 walkup rate if you search online in advance. It is really a little oasis, with its own spring fed swimming pool. Must visit is Scottys Castle in the North end of the valley.

That should give you some ideas, let me know if you want any more details.

Although I do like LA as it has Disneyland and Universal Studios I wouldn't spend too much time there. As Mr Stoat says San Francisco and the surrounding area is beautiful. San Fran is one of my all time favourite cities and Yosemite is jaw droppingly stunning.
I did a three weeks road trip 8 years ago and went from San Fran to Lake Tahoe, then Yosemite, onto the desert (could do Death Valley), onto the Grand Canyon and finally Las Vegas. As for Vegas mid strip is a good area to be in.

BTW, biggest outlet mall I have ever seen is in Ventura, just north of LA. Even had a North Face outlet. Wear comfy shoes this place is huge, when you think it is finished, you are wrong, it just keeps going.

Eeek, how exciting!

We are planning our honeymoon for next year and are doing a similar trip. We are going to fly in to Vegas, and spend 4 nights there, then pop over to San Fran for 3 nights! We are then going to spend three days driving down the coast, and then have a day in LA. Hearst Castle does look amazing! From the few pictures I have seen it reminds me of the great Gatsby.

Our original plan then included a weeks stay in Hawaii, but it didn't look how I imagined it to look in the pictures. We then thought about flying to Cancun from LA, it's about a 4.5hr flight, but we were planning on flying straight home from Mexico, so that kind of compensated for the longer travelling distance.

Now the plan has changed again lol! We are now going to fly to Florida, spend a day in Magic Kingdom, and Islands of adventure, and then pick up the Disney Caribbean cruise!

I think you and I will have wonderful trips lol! Enjoy planning it! :thumbsup2

:O

Did you really just suggest that on a Disney board??

Please don't skip DL Steffi!!! (Not that you would!)

DL is not to be missed or California adventure park. Cars land alone would be worth it. X

I will definately look into the guide book - thanks for that tip!

We would probably look at flying into LA/SF anyway, but thankyou for confimring that :)

Hearst Castle has popped up a ouple of times - I will research that one!

Thankyou :) Your roadtrip sounds awesome - although I wouldn't be driving, Tom would, so I'd have to see how he'd feel!

Tink,
One thing to watch for in Vegas Hotels, some charge an extra resort fee ontop of your room rate, some charge an outrageous ammount for a room safe, be sure to check the details and small print before you hit the book it now button.

Torsie,
I will say it, the Emperor Has No Clothes On! :dance3:

Disneyland single park advance ticket, one day $92, one day park hopper $137. :sad2:
Knotts Berry Farm, single day advance ticket $39.:cool1:
