Were there another kind of wrist bands at WDW this spring?

I was talking to my mom on the phone tonight and telling her that we got our Magic Bands in the mail today. To which she tells me, completely unimpressed, "Oh yeah, we had to get those when we went this Spring". She proceeds to tell me how they were told that they had to go trade in their paper tickets at some window before they went into EPCOT, and that they had to get the wrist bands, and that EVERYONE was having to do that. This was confusing to me, so I suggested perhaps it was people with Florida discount passes that had to do it (maybe some sort of test for them?), and she assured me that NOPE, it was EVERYONE going into the parks. They all had Magic Bands.

I, being a reader of the Disboards and the MagicBand test reports, do not believe her. Especially since someone reported recently that the CMs were excited because these were some of the first Magic Bands they had seen. And I'm wondering what in the world she was talking about.

Is she crazy? Or am I? :confused3

Thoughts?????

We went in March and only then traded in our paper AP for the RFID AP card. I didn't see a single band in site at that time. Now that was March, but I doubt anything to the scale she's talking about actually happened.

We were there in April and no bands were being used yet(that we could see). We have annual passes that were paper, we had to get them replaced with plastic cards. Do you think that is what she was talking about?

Just back form July trip and saw no magic bands during the 14 night stay, We did have to get our paper AP's turned to the plastic RFID card.
If she is anything like my Mom she will act like she is in the know although she doesn't have a clue, lol!

This.

I traded my annual pass in in April for the new card (which at that point was only being done at the Odyssey Pavilion) and specifically asked when/if I could get a band. I was told they wouldn't be available until later in the year, and at that point the CM I spoke with wasn't even sure if I'd get one for free or if I'd have to pay for one.

Ftr, mine was a regular annual pass, but my parents were with me when it happened and traded theirs in as well. Theirs were Florida resident passes.

They had the bands on display at the Odyssey where AP holders were getting their Tyvek APs changed to RFID cards there. No one was getting them.

The only people who may have had them at the time would have been cast members for testing.

If she had to turn in her tickets for MagicBands...does she still have them?

I'm not aware of Disney using wristbands of any type otherwise, except for the mini-photopasses and gift cards, which are just little cards on a springy bracelet.

She said that what happened was that they got "yelled at" by the people at one park for not trading in their paper cards for magic bands, but that they didn't do it because she didn't want to waste time. I still think it was the RFID CARDS they were getting not bands, but she insists.

Oh well, doesn't matter really. I just wanted her to be excited about our Magic Bands instead of "ho hum, EVERYONE was getting them when I was there in May. No biggie that you just got yours in the mail". And of course there is my pride because I read the DisBoards and I like to think I know what's going on. :wizard:

Wait what ? You got yours in the mail ?

It's currently in a guest test phase. Guests checking in at AKL, CR, POP and YC this month are able to customize MagicBands for their stay, and they are mailed to your home.

Yes, and yes!

In fact, the only reason I knew about the Magic Band test at Pop in August was from reading the Disboards! So THEN after reading the Disboards I went out to my Disney Experience and there was a message for me to customize my Magic Bands and start making FP+ ressies. Pretty crazy!!!!

:thumbsup2 to the bolded text. I remember reading management types were testing them in the spring and sure enough we saw a family with them while in the FP line at Soarin'. Another guest asked about them and one of the parents explained to the guest what they were.

Me too! I linked our Pop reservation last night and saw I could customize our bands and make FP+ reservations (once I put our AP info in). I ordered our bands as that was all I really cared to do. I can't wait to get some bling for it. Yep, Disney saw me coming when they created all those accessories for the bands.

I was there at the end of May/beginning of June and saw a couple of families with MagicBands (one family in line for Everest and another in Beaches & Cream). I am staying at AKL in October so hopefully I'll get to test them!

I was just at Disney staying at pop aug 5-10 and tested the magicbands. I will say I loved them. We had no problems with them at all..and the fastpass plus worked perfectly. I did however have problems with the accessories for the bands. They're called magicbandits. They are cute but I lost 2 of them even though I made sure they were snapped in securely. And the back of one actually punctured my wrist! They're cute but flawed. And I wouldn't buy them again.
