We're Still Hungry! A DDW July Getaway - 8/5 Complete!

My eyes immediately went to the bison listed on the menu. I knew that's what I would choose so I was hoping that was what caught your eye too. And OMG - it looks fantastic!!! No Brown Derby in our plans for Oct., but if they keep the Bison on the menu, it will definitely be in the plans if/when we go next year.

The bison looks amazing! I am so happy it is on the menu. It is definitely something I hope to order when I go to HBD.

Wow, that bison looks really good! I've only had a bison burger once. We have Ted's Montana Grill down the block and they serve all their burgers in beef or bison. I usually get the beef though!

I knew I'd regret reading that review. Between you and Brenda raving about HBD I'm afraid I'm going to have to change another ADR!!

Very glad that I already added HBD in! :thumbsup2 Was actually reading the menus to DH & DS last night and the bison intrigued DS. I think he will definitely be trying that if it is still on the menu!
Since your trip is so soon at this point, hopefully it'll stay on the menu and he'll be able to try it. :thumbsup2

Yay for bison! It's DH's favourite and we get some filets from a local farm as a special treat from time to time and grill it at home, so he will certainly want to try this dish out in October. It wasn't on the menu when I made the ADR, I know I wanted to try the Cobb salad, and I thought DH would go for the duck.

Thanks for the great review! :)
While Brown Derby's menu might change by October, I think there's a good chance that either the duck (which was awesome in May) or the bison (which is new) will be around. And of course, the Cobb salad is a classic. Grilling bison filets from a local farm sounds fantastic. :goodvibes

Aha! So that was the alternate plan to Sanaa. Cool choice since I'm a huge HBD fan! :thumbsup2

When you asked if we saw what you were ordering on the menu yet I was going to guess "duck two ways!" :lmao: But yes, bison was the perfect choice.

The bison looked amazing - perfectly cooked and sliced thin. The croquettes sound wonderful even if they looked like fried cheese at first glance. :p

Both the AP fruit cobbler and this version look delish.... I may have to try both for comparison purposes too. Thanks for including the photos of your prior versions, that was a great idea.
The duck two ways is great, but I had to go with the newer option. And those croquettes were awesome - I'm normally not a huge fan of breaded & fried foods, but these were worth it. :thumbsup2

Now that you mention the "comparison" between Artist Point and Brown Derby, I think it's interesting that this meal largely mirrored a classic meal at Artist Point (white bread with salted butter; buffalo entree; berry cobbler). The bison and cobbler were prepared differently here, but still fantastic in their own way. I think ordering both cobblers is a great idea - they're two of my favorite Disney desserts! :goodvibes

I just saw your comment on iloveeeyore's PTR about now knowing where you are from! Heck, I may be curious (ok, nosey) but I didn't want to ask and be a creeper! :rotfl2: You've evolved so far from my original estimation of you being a mature (read, much older) individual from Canada (not sure where that impression came from.) And yes, I did call you a lassie once in my extreme ignorance. Again, my apologies for that! :lmao:

Now I simply know you as Mr. DDW who writes amazingly articulate reviews with great photos who MUST take more WDW trips (e.g., circa August 18th) so we can enjoy your great talent!!! :yay:
Thank you so much! Very cool to see how your impression of me has changed (although it would be kind of cool if the Canada part were true :lmao:), and hopefully we'll all be taking more WDW trips in the future. :thumbsup2

Maybe if the dish becomes popular, it'll become a more permanent fixture on the menu. That dish seems to be in the "wildcard" spot (in May, it was lamb), but perhaps they'd be willing to keep it around longer if it gained a following. :)

The bison looks amazing! I am so happy it is on the menu. It is definitely something I hope to order when I go to HBD.
I hope the bison sticks around for your trip. Even if that dish happens to change, there are so many entrees that sound great (but it would be a very nice bonus if it happened to stay). :goodvibes

I've been to a Ted's Montana Grill in NYC! I don't think I ordered anything exciting though (it was either a beef or chicken sandwich). You don't have to add a Brown Derby ADR to your next trip, but I'm glad to hear that it's a contender now. :thumbsup2

We had an experience at HBD where the food was only "pretty good," but it was several years ago. DH and I would love to give it another try, and thought we might, since we are on the DxDP this trip...but DS(15) emphatically vetoed that idea. He was way too turned off last time. He literally liked NOTHING on the table. Oh, well, maybe someday...meantime, more availability for you and everyone else!

The bison and cobbler look awesome! The truffle croquettes sound delightful!

The dessert looks good!!! mmmm + I've been wanting to try the HBD cobb for awhile!!

Wow, the current HBD menu looks amazing! There are 5 (maybe 6) appetizers, 6 entrees and 4 desserts that sound great to me. I would have had a very difficult time choosing what to have.

I wish the menu had looked like that when I was last there in May 2011. First of all, I don't remember them having so many choices on their menu then. And most of the ones they did have at that time were unappealing to us. I ended up getting the Cobb salad for my entree, but made the mistake of saying the dressing could be mixed in with the salad. Consequently, the salad was way too wet for my taste. :sad2: DD1 had the pork chop (a different version) and enjoyed it, but the current version sounds even better. What did really impress me from that meal though was the service, which was excellent...the best of that trip!

So anyway, my next trip (which unfortunately will probably not be for awhile :sad1:), I will definitely be checking out the HBD menu. :thumbsup2

Woah - I didn't realize the "d" even stood for something! You should definitely buy him that hat :thumbsup2

Yep, our last name begins with a "j" and the remaining letters of jabead each stand for one of our family of 5. I am the "b" for Barb. ;)

Love your HBD review! Makes me happy I have an ADR there on our DHS day!! I gave up 50's PT for it so am hoping it is worth it as I have been craving the Fried Chicken at 50's!! (Of course fried chicken is not WDW exclusive so that is why I switched!)

Aw, that's okay - I'm sure you'll be able to give Brown Derby another try eventually. :)

That cobbler was delicious, and the Cobb salad is really good - it could definitely be a filling entree (or an appetizer that's a good value on the DxDP). I always get it without the cheese and with the dressing on the side - just perfect. :thumbsup2

Very interesting - I also had a meal at Brown Derby in May 2011 that I didn't love (in fact, in my May 2011 HBD review I commented that I should've stuck with the grapefruit cake or cobbler for dessert - I know myself too well ). But I quickly returned and have enjoyed all my meals since then. I agree that the salad would be less enjoyable with the dressing on it (most restaurants tend to add far too much, IMO). :( Whenever you return, hopefully Brown Derby's menu will be as good as it is now. :goodvibes

Very cool and creative! I would've never figured out what your username meant. :lmao:

I think Brown Derby is a really great choice - like I said, it's my top choice for a theme park restaurant. I've had fun experiences at 50's and Sci-Fi, but Brown Derby still wins for its delicious food, relaxed atmosphere (for a theme park restaurant), and usually great service. :thumbsup2

After a few more rides at DHS, I walked over to the Boardwalk and stopped at Seashore Sweets. This is a fun shop and a great place to buy some sugary snacks.

They were offering free samples of the white chocolate chip cookie. I tried it and didn't love it (I didn't even finish the sample), but it was still nice of them to offer samples of something. :)

They're currently selling rice krispie treats shaped like turkey legs. What a fitting continuation of the Disney Turkey Leg franchise (they've already made turkey leg t-shirts). I wonder what's next - perhaps turkey leg air fresheners? (Actually, yes.) I've never tried a turkey leg, and I have no intention of buying any of these turkey leg spin-off products, but clearly people out there are gobbling them up. :p

Since it was a hot day, I felt like something cool and refreshing - I chose a kid's cup of strawberry soft serve. This really hit the spot - in fact, it beat out the melty dole whip from earlier in the trip. :goodvibes

To top things off, my outdoor table had a beautiful view of Crescent Lake and the Boardwalk.

Between the free sample, intriguing rice krispie treats, and delicious soft serve, Seashore Sweets was a wonderful place for a snack. And thanks to its convenient location on the Boardwalk, it's easy to visit on either an Epcot or DHS day. :thumbsup2

As simple as that strawberry soft serve looks, it also looks very refreshing and satisfying on a hot Florida day. I could go for some of that up here in my neck of the woods. YUM, I love strawberry anything (just about anything :lmao:)

I am also not a fan of the turkey legs. I have never had one, but when I see people eating them, it just doesn't look civilized. Not my thing, but I am suprized that my DH has never insisted on having one, it is so up his alley. :rotfl2:

I feel the same way (about both strawberries and turkey legs)! Strawberry is my favorite flavor of ice cream, and I love desserts that incorporate it - in addition, I could happily eat fresh strawberries (or other types of berries). The other good thing about this soft serve is that it didn't taste very "artificial". :thumbsup2

I can (kind of) see why people like turkey legs - they're an iconic Disney theme park food, in the same vein as popcorn, Mickey Premium bars, dole whips, pretzels, etc. That said, the turkey leg is the messiest of all these snacks, and it looks so huge! I wouldn't want to walk around with turkey skin and sauce all over my face.

That strawberry soft serve actually looks good. I like soft serve but generally stick to vanilla (unless you count Dole Whip or the "yogurt" I love at Red Mango) because the flavored ones always have a weird artificial taste. That looks like they might have actually used strawberries in it.

Lovely scenery.

I can't believe you havent tried the turkey leg! Are you planning on trying it soon? I have been debating whether to try it or not on this trip since it is so highly regarded. I think I just might if I get peckish in between meals.

Thanks for that great idea! And right now I'm evolving a plan ;)...
Between Seashore Sweets, Boardwalk Bakery, and Beaches & Cream, I feel like the Epcot resort area is a must if you're looking for a delicious sugary snack. :thumbsup2

I really liked this soft serve, and I also like Red Mango! They actually use real fruit juice in many of their yogurts, which is a nice touch. :)

Lovely scenery.

Probably not. The reasons why I don't want to try a turkey leg are its huge size, the messiness factor, and all the skin (I don't like poultry skin). I suppose I could sit down, take off the skin, and eat it with a knife and fork, but that doesn't sound very fun.

I've tried a Turkey Leg... but that was at DL and only because everything else was closed and we were HUNGRY!!! So we plopped down on the curb with our Turkey legs and caveman styled it!

They flavor was okay but not something I am dying to have again!

Turkey legs have never been of any interest to me either. And my husband was all confused the first time I mentioned them to him. I don't think he has any interest in trying one either.

And it's funny you had strawberry since I just finished some strawberry ice cream. (Our office has cake & ice cream that last Monday of every month and that's today.) I haven't been feeling great today but saw the strawberry ice cream and thought it looked good so that's what I grabbed. I also had strawberries on my salad for lunch. So it's a strawberry kind of day.
