My childhood friend moved outside of Atlanta almost 2 years ago. I went to visit in Feb. and thought I would puke right on her front lawn! My whole house could fit in her master suite and I paid a lot more for mine. I called DH and told him we should move there. I was all talk though because I don't do change well. On the drive back from WDW last week we stopped to see them. DH was hooked. He had already been job hunting because he is tired of the commute so he said he wants to move and get a job in GA. We are meeting with a realtor tonight to put our house up for sale!!!! Ohmigoodness!!!! Is this really happening? I knew I would have trouble leaving behind my BF. I broke the news to her and she starts crying! :sad1: Anyway I teasingly said she could move also. I directed her to the website of the builder and she went home and showed her DH and he had already been talking about moving so he was all for it!!!  Whoohoo!!! They aren't moving to the same subdivision but to the next county!! I am too excited!

Now of course if you are from that area tell me the good the bad and the ugly. ALso, if you have relocated tell me the good the bad and the ugly. Built a home, tell me the good the bad and the ugly!!! I am so clueless! DH wants to be in GA by the time school starts, even if we have to move into temp. housing while the house is finished.

GA girl here -just saying welcome! I hope it is a good move for you.

Good luck!! I hope you sell your current home quickly and get your asking price :) Isn't the housing market in the northeast nuts???

Wow, good luck!

Funny about your friend moving, too.

When we moved here to Maryland our friends moved from Texas, too. Not the same circumstances--our DH's both worked at the same company and they both got jobs at another company and we became closer after moving. But we joked that if one of us ever moved again that the other family needed to also agree to move. That was almost 15 years ago, though, so I don't think that's happening! :teeth:

I can't say I've ever moved or relocated, but it does sound very exciting! I wish you the best of luck and just think about how much nicer the weather must be in Georgia vs. Rhode Island in January!

That's reason enough for me...

It's not like you will be missing anyone, you've managed to convince your best friend to move with you!!

What specific area are you moving to? I moved to Cumming (northeast of Atlanta) last August, and I've learned that there are a LOT of areas that are referred to as "just outside Atlanta." I moved here from south Florida, and I am SO happy here. The people are wonderful, the weather is nice, and the surroundings are pretty.

Good luck with your move!

We are moving to Fulton County. I am from little RI so I am still trying to figure out all the areas "outside of Atlanta"

I am most excited about being less than 6 hours from WDW!!!!

That's how I came to live in Orlando... visited a friend while DD and I did Disney for the first time - fell in love with the style of the houses here (from PA - they don't build houses there like they do in FL) and at that time real estate was sooooo "cheap" compared to PA. I went home, and in two days was on the phone with a realtor, and spend every waking (non working) moment on line looking for houses. Within in a few days I had a mortgage pre-approved, and was headed to Orlando to go house hunting! Found THE house the first day, put an offer in the next, and before I boarded the plane back to PA - the offer was accepted!

I did not have to find a job - my job moved with me! (I love 100% telecommuting) so between March 19th and May 28th - I made the decision - broke it to my family, found the house, and closed on it - drove from PA to Orlando on May 29th and 30th!

I have never looked back.. even though the friend lives only 3 miles from me - we rarely see each other - but I have no regrets. I moved away from my entire family - except DD, but now we have DISNEY and everybody comes to visit us!!!!

Good luck and enjoy!

Wow, please tell me: what kind of jobs do you have that you can just pick up and move and get the same kind of job (and I assume good pay) anywhere you want?

We were going to move to Atlanta but DH's job promotion fell through. He is looking for a new job now (long long story, he is still employeed) and right now for us it is looking like Ft. Lauderdale area. To be honest I would rather go to Atlanta but I'll take Ft. Lauderdale too!

Good Luck...

congrats on the big move!! I don't know if I'd ever have the guts to move so far away from our hometown...I would love to on one hand, but I also don't do well with change. I envy you!!

Now, I may be getting you confused with another poster, but do you have a teen DD that has gone to live with her Dad?? That's you right?? Is she going to move with you too or is she staying in RI with her father? How has she taken to the news?

Just wanted to say good luck, and hope everything falls into place for you! Please keep us posted on the move. I know I'd like hearing all about it. :)

What about you other daughter that you are leaving behind? How does she feel now? You sent her away to the her Dad's house and now you are moving 1000 miles away!

Fulton County is a BIG "county". I think everything from Alpharetta to South Fulton is considered Fulton County.

Anyway, if you are looking at South Fulton, there are some FABULOUS homes going up for really good prices.... a lot of home for the money and a pretty good commute. If you are looking up in North Fulton, you'll pay a more premium price for homes but you can still find affordable living especially with real estate values going up.

Good luck!

don't know about the op, but when we were looking at moving out of this area for my ph.d. program dh and i discivered that he could get a job pretty much anywhere with a paycut significantly less than the difference between COL. it would have been very easy for him to relocate. (fortunate for me since the job i want requires a lot of relocation). he works in IT.

i am really looking forward to the day i get my ph.d. and we can move out of this area!!!

to the op - good luck with your move!

The good:

better weather
closer to Disney
much cheaper area to live

The bad:

new construction problems-little, easily repairable things like small leaks, nail pops, etc.
learning a new area-including a new state's tax code-you would be surprised the difference from state to state.

The ugly:

the possibility of 2 house payments
temporary housing-we spent 3 months cramped in a room at a Courtyard during our move as our home was not ready, but my job was.
telling grandma that her grandson was moving 300 miles away.

I will actually be 13 hours CLOSER to her! She is in NC.

I think GA is a lovely state, especially in the Atlanta area. I'm sure you'll enjoy the area.

I saw another poster had asked about your oldest dd. In this day of planes, trains and automobiles I'm sure the visitations can all be worked out well.

ETA: I see you posted about your dd before I did, lol. I should looked closer!
