I'm so excited, my parents purchased our membership AKV this evening! I'm looking forward to receiving our membership information. What should we expect in the mail? Thanks!

Welcome home and congratulations. When you say purchased this evening, I am not sure what stage of the process you are in -- was this a purchase by phone and you are now waiting for the paperwork or was this done on site and all the contracts have already been signed? I am assuming it is the former.

What you will get in about a week is a box-like folder with the contract and other documents that you need to sign (and return by overnight delivery) and all the public offering documents that set out the nature and details of the program and all the rules and regs applicable to DVC. To read it all takes several hours to a day. Much of it is written by lawyers so you may have problems at times understanding although the contracts themselves are fairly straight-forward. After you have returned the things to be signed, along any further required payment or mortgage agreement, there will be a closing anywhere from 20 to 40 days later and then you will receive a copy of the things you signed along with a closing statement (you do not need to attend closing). At about the same time or not long after you will get your member cards.

As far as being able to make future ressies, you can do so as soon as you have a member number which they can probaly give you now or will do so as soon as you have returned the contracts.

And, of course, when all is said and done you will need to consider whether you want to change your site name from "AKLFan3" to "AKVFan3."

Thank you for all of the information, drusba, and the warm welcome. My parents purchased over the phone literally 10 minutes before I posted. I figured it would be a lot of paperwork, particularly with the contract. I will actually be a lawyer in a few months (keeping my fingers crossed on passing the bar exam ), so I'm not too worried about understanding the contract. But thanks for the heads up. I can help my parents read through the contract. I'm looking forward to being able to access the member site and receiving any other DVC materials that they do not send to non-members.

It is all very exciting becoming a DVC member and getting access to everything. Call your guide and ask for your membership number once assigned and you can start making your reservations even before the paperwork is finished.

Oh no, it is in my parents' names. But the plan is once I start my own family, I can either buy it from them, or my parents will leave it to me in their will. They already informed me that once I start working, I will have to contribute to the costs of vacationing since it is only fair. Luckily, they won't try to make a profit off of me.
