we're finally going to disney world!! (april 2009)

Hello there! I've been lurking on this PTR for a few days and I decided to finally stick my nose in.
I'm a Disneyland native as well (although we don't own AP's--we've been enough times that we should have gotten them). My family had our first trip to the World last July and let me just say, it's nothing like you expect it to be. It's so much better. So, so much more than you expect. It's crazy. Your plans look really good, I must say. You seem to have plenty of relaxing time in there which is pretty good because Disney World can be really overstimulating to any age. I would suggest (and this is only my opinion) spending some time in EPCOT. If your boys are into thrills, most of Future World is definately for them. And I could spend days exploring World Showcase. It's just beautiful. And, the number of days at Magic Kingdom... It just really depends on how you're planning to tour. If you don't want to see any of the same things that are at Disneyland, there's still quite a few things to explore. And remember that, in Disney, no two attractions are alike. Many of the "same" rides between Magic Kingdom on either coast, have some remarkable differences that make them all the more enjoyable. DTD is a theme park sized area on its own and should be taken in a relaxed manner, most definately. If you want to go for a while on your first day, I'd suggest going back in the middle or last day of the trip.
Unfortunately, I can't answer your questions about DME because I've never stayed onsite, but if you want to know whether or not you can leave earlier than 3 hours before your flight, I would suggest e-mailing Disney via the WDW website or asking the kind ladies (and gentleman) on the Disney Mom's Panel. I wouldn't be too worried about not making it to your gate on time if leaving 3 hours early (lines are on again off again and vary each day) but occasionally, some things do happen.
And as for books, I would most definately suggest The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World. You can either buy or simply take it out of your local library. It's bulky, but worth it's weight in gold, giving all sorts of tips and tricks. It also has great touring plans which you can use to your advantage but if you're going for relaxed, the plans don't allow much room for that. There are all sorts of different books out there--Birnbaum's and any of the Unofficial WDW guides (there's about 5). Anything helps really. As does reading trip reports here on the DIS. ;)
But, of course, the most important thing of a Disney vacation--have fun, take pictures, laugh, and breathe. :)

Last year I went to the local library and took out every Disney book I could find..I hadn't been to Disney in a few years and although I didn't plan that trip nearly as well as I did this one, the books still helped.

This year I splurged and got the 2009 Unofficial Guide..I love this boook. I really don't go anywhere without it and you can learn so many useful tips from it! The Binnabuams (sp?) guide is also a good one as well!

I don't want to start planning my plan of attack for the parks either...but with only 30 days left its going to have to happen at some point

As far as tour books go I am on the Unofficial Guide bandwagon. AND....if you buy the book your subscription to the website is included! You have access to all the touring plans! I LOVE mine! It is definitely big, but it has SO much information! I used it for our last trip as well and the info was right on!;)

Is it really free?? I bought my book and I didn't know this! How does it work??!

If you go to the website (touringplans.com), on the registration it asks you questions about the book (i.e "what the first word on page 736?") and then it gets you registered.

not sure if anyone is reading this at all...since i haven't been on for any updates lately...but this is good for me...just to type things out, and get things off my mind!!

i just received our luggage tags the other day, which was very exciting! cuz now it seems like the trip is here soon! and today, we received our documents? i assume they are the documents. so i guess i'm not receiving any more mail from disney...

ok...i made my packing list! not sure if anyone is interested...we're basically packing shorts & t-shirts. that's all. oh...and 2 dress shirts each for the boys, in case they have to dress up to go eat. i think i have one fancy restaurant to eat at. 1 jeans, 1 hoodie/sweat shirt, 2 long sleeve shirts (for layering), 2 swimming trunks, socks, flip flops, underwears, p.j. each for the boys. am i forgetting anything? i'm not sure how the weather will be in april...from what i've read, it sounds like it'll be nice..around 75-80?

i've been swamped at work! we've got report cards coming up, and open house, and i'm trying not so stress so much about our trip...since my last day will be that friday, and the next day, i'm off to the airport! thank goodness that friday we have a minimum day (we get out early @ 12:30). so i'll have half the day to still pack before sending the boys to bed!

our touring plan...i've written down all the rides that have fp...and i kinda have an idea of which rides we want to go on. but i think we're sorta going to play it by ear. one day, i'll sit down w/the boys on the computer & look at the disney website, and see which rides/attractions they would like to check out...and make our list that way. so i don't really have a "touring plan".

which reminds me...so i was thinking about a travel book to splurge on. and i was at target last weekend...and guess what i found in the dollar bins? a little travel guide for wdw! a tiny pocket size one! i'm sure it's not as wonderful as the other ones you've all mentioned above...but i think it'll do for me. it's got many restaurant reviews, where to spot the fireworks displays, etc. i didn't finish reading it yet...just kinda taking it slow, i know!

that's all the "updates" i have so far. i think i'm really afraid to tackle the "touring plan". so i'll just leave it be...

gotta go catch up on all the other pre-trip reports i've subscribed to. oh...did you know that if you don't sign in/log in, you stop receiving those emails from the disboards? i just realized that...and here i was thinking no one has been posting, like me! but silly me! the world goes on!!

ok, until next time...:flower:

Still here! Glad you're back!

We were there in late April of 2007 and it was in the mid-80s every day. Not sure about earlier in the month, but the weather in late April was PERFECT!

This is what I did with my boys for our first trip. I did end up using a touring plan to plan the actual day, but as long as you know which rides are your priorities and which have FPs you should be okay. I just like to have a plan so we don't end up wandering aimlessly. If we see something we want to do that's "out of order" or " not on the plan" we take time to do it and don't sweat it. The plan is just a guideline to help plan out the day for me. Not being familiar with the parks it was nice to have someone else map out the best routes, order of rides, etc.

LOL! :rotfl: Welcome back!

Looks like everything is moving along smoothly for you! Glad to hear it :goodvibes Your packing list looks good...I think by april the weather will be nicer than it is now but I'm hoping it will get better by the 21st when we leave!

I hear ya about the touring plans...I've been thinking about ours and just found out yesterday that my family doesn't want to have a touring plan at all! They just don't understand

guess what came in the mail today??!!?? 2 books my sister in law sent me! walt disney world with kids 2009, and hidden mickeys: a field guide to walt disney world's best kept secrets. i was so excited! i've seen the hidden mickey one from disneyland, and was wondering if they had similar one for wdw. she must have read my mind!! i enjoy finding hidden mickeys when i'm at disneyland...so i'm really excited about this! but i'm not going to let this consume me at the parks. it'll just be a fun reading for now, and on the plane. Justin, our oldest wants to read it on the plane...that would be good, so while we're in line at the parks or when we have down time, instead of being "bored", he can be on the lookout for some hidden mickeys! it'll add more to our disney experience, i guess. and i can have our youngest & our niece join in on the hunt as well.

that's all the news for now. i have to do laundry next week, so i can start thinking about packing. tomorrow, i'm trying to go do some last minute shopping for summer clothes/shorts/etc. i can't believe our trip is coming so soon. can't wait!! :flower:

ok...so i did "inventory" on my boys' summer outfits, to see what still fits, what i need to buy, etc. and i went shopping yesterday. bought some shorts for the boys. picked up these "dry shirts" from target...thought they were interesting. i think they are for when you play sports. these shirts absort sweat, and cools you down. and i thought they are perfect for wdw, where the sun is out, and you're at the park all day walking in the heat. i got some white ones. found some swimming trunks on sale at old navy! and i had a 30% off coupon too! the thing w/swimming trunks...our boys are really thin, and they have such tiny waists! and most of the swimming trunks i see at the stores don't have the waist that ties! the elastic is way too big for them! so swimming trunks are really hard to find for us...i'll have to go down several sizes just so the waist will fit...then, i have a problem w/the trunks being too short on the boys, since it's couple sizes too small for them! i hate having to look for new swimming trunks because of the above mentioned problems! so when i find some that fits, i grab them, and am so thrilled!!

anyways...this coming weekend, we're having a family fun night, where we're watching our wdw vacation dvd (2nd time around), and having the boys tell me which rides they want to go on, what they want to do, etc. i kinda have a touring plan in my head...but after we watch the dvd, and go thru the rides/parks on the computer, i'll have a better sense, and i can actually put our plan in words/writing! :flower:

ok...trying not to freak out here, w/out a firm "touring plan". the boys' suitcase is pretty much packed. now i have to work on mine. DH is on his own! i do know which park we are going on which days, and what entertainment/night time shows we are trying to catch. i do have a list of the rides/shows the boys wanted to go on/see...i'll have to figure out which rides have fastpasses, and check out the maps to see where the rides are located at.

for those who are still reading...do your touring plans go like in a flow? like you walk along a path, and hit the rides along the way? or is it like random, where you go to your "top attraction", and go to the next, etc.? and sort of zig-zag thru the park? not sure if that made any sense...:flower:

HI! Only 5 more days.....how exciting!!

You sound like you are doing well as far as getting ready. You are going at a busy time so you may want to take a look at the UG site and just see what the touring plans can offer as far as a more organized plan. If you have your must-do rides, you can see if there is a touring plan that incorporates all of them. I just think it would help you not to be wandering all over and zig-zag'ing across the park. And remember...they are a guideline, not a rule so you can vary from them....it's just nice to have something to fall back on if the parks are crazy busy!

Good luck getting all those last minute things done! Woo-Hoo for only 5 more days!! :woohoo::woohoo:

So cool. Only a few more days until you're on your way to Disney!!! Ok, the UG touring plans do keep you going across the park (not so bad in some parks, as compared to others). for the most part, this is because Disney has their hub then all the "good" rides (aka, longest wait time rides) are dispersed pretty evenly around either side. Most touring plans, I find, keep you running early in the day as to minimize your wait time throughout the rest of the day. There are some pay programs, such as RideMax, that likewise keep you running, but you can input what exactly you want to do in each of the parks and it gives you a plan from there. I have yet to try Tour Guide Mike, but he seems to have a really big following here on the Dis. If you just want a basic outline of what to do, try the UG's Recommended Visitation Times for all the parks in the back of the book and do a layout from there. Also, on TouringPlans.com (and TGM) you can find a list of upcoming dates and what the least crowded parks and the parks to avoid on those days. It's taken from history and what conventions are in town. The most important part of your vacation, though, is to make time to relax. Vacations to Disney aren't just about the rides and parades and getting to see them. It's about being with the people you love and seeing the magic touch all of them and you.
Happy 5 days.

to check out ug's site, don't you have to have the book? unfortunately, i don't have that one! will do more investigating tonight...thanx for reading! i'm thinking we'll have a "basic plan", and see what happens. we're all pretty easy going...but like everyone has been saying...it's better to have some sort of a plan, than no plan at all! so for the next couple of days...that's what i'm doing. i'll have to pack tonight for myself. just found out that the scrapbook store at dtd is no longer there. :confused3 so sad!! :flower:

we're off tomorrow! the boys are really excited! they couldn't contain themselves! i can't believe our trip is here! i think we've got everything...thanx for reading!!:flower:

we're back!!! we had such a great time!! now...is there a place for post trip reports? or do i post here? anyone w/questions, before your trip...i'd be glad to try to answer!! :flower:

Welcome back! Glad to hear you had a great time!

I think if you PM the moderator of this board, she will move your PTR to the Trip Report board for you.

Can't wait to hear about your trip! :cool1:
