Wen Haircare Therapy - reviews?

Thanks again for all the info! I may have missed it but do you rinse w/ the vinegar striaght, or dilute it? And where so you get the sulfate-free shampoo bars? thanks!:)

Dilute it. You only need about a tablespoon or two of the vinegar diluted in a large cup of water. Pour it over your hair after co-washing, and then put your thicker conditioner over it and comb through.

I use shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley Farms. They have all kinds of wonderful shampoo soaps and regular soaps. You can get small trial size bars pretty cheap to find one you really like. The full size bars last ages. My favorites are the Summer Sunshine, and the Beer and Honey (which I think they sell as a body soap, but it works on the hair as well).

Do you mind of I ask which conditioner you used? Glad it's worked so well for you!:goodvibes

I was actually staying in a hotel this weekend so I used their little bottles of conditioner. I didn't think it was going to go well as I usually use sulfate free, paraben free shampoo but I was pleasantly surprised. I have a HUGE bottle of Redken All Soft conditioner that I plan on using next time (as I don't like it as a regular after shampoo conditioner) so we'll see how that goes.

OK, I just started this. I don't wash my hair everyday, so I've only done it a couple times so far. So far so good. I'm so worried that my hair will start feeling oily and heavy, but I'm going to do it a few more times and see how it goes. This could be a good thing :goodvibes. I used a combo of a lighter detangling type conditioner and a deeper conditioner. I have several kinds, so I'll have to experiment a little with them. A lady at the beauty supply store told me I could mix regular conditioner with water and spray it in my hair as a leave-in conditioner as well. I like to have some type of product in before I style my hair.

Good luck with it! If you find your hair getting a bit heavy and weighed down you may have to wash with a shampoo occasionally. The trick is to using one with no sulfates. I use solid shampoo bars, but I think L'Oreal actually has a sulfate free shampoo now too. It takes a bit of work to find out what works just right for your hair.

This is great for those non cleansing days. I have slightly wavy hair. I spray it in and blow dry style with a round brush.

Thanks for this link - I got some of the sample size bars - I likey!:thumbsup2

OK, I just started this......A lady at the beauty supply store told me I could mix regular conditioner with water and spray it in my hair as a leave-in conditioner as well.

How goes it? Also, how do you mix this up ? (ie, half conditioner, half water - or what?) Thanks in advance.

So, checking in at about the one month mark. some good - some not.....I still dont seem to have the right combo for me yet...:sad1:

The soap bars are nice - using about once a week - though, they so seem to strip my hair a bit...

Then, the conditioning ...my hair SEEMS in better condition (it's shinier, I have 'new' curls I never had before, and it's very 'bouncy' and full...) but, it still feels REALLY dry and no 'softer'. In fact, hard to believe but the ends feel even drier than before and it's harder to comb? I'm so confused...:upsidedow

Thanks again for the advise and ideas - it's nice to be trying something that might help....one day!:goodvibes:woohoo:

Tried wen don't like it but I'm hooked on Ojon. I know some people don't like the smell but I love it and only receive compliments on how healthy my hair is and how great it smells.

One of DH's co-workers gave me her bottle of Wen after the girls at the salon asked her what on earth she was using on her hair, when they went to wash it for her cut they couldn't get over how greasy & built up with products her hair was, it was the Wen products. Who knows if she wasn't rinsing it out enough or what but it made her hair gross. She knew I was thinking about trying the Wen products so she gave me her's to try.

I'm not a fan of Wen either, it makes my hair to heavy even after rinsing and rinsing and rinsing. I really wanted it to work for me but it just doesn't do it for me :confused3

My hair is very greasy, I can't go a day without shampooing and I can't even shampoo at night and style in the AM, its just way too greasy :headache: I would like to try co-washing since I also color and heat style my hair but I'm afraid its going to get grossly greasy again

Interesting thread. I may give this co-washing a try. My hair is dry and damaged. I'm just afraid I won't feel 'clean'. On a related note, does anyone have any ideas on a smelly scalp, lol. My dd washed her hair every day. She has very thick hair that gets greasy if not washed every day, but it never smells very nice. Like if she is laying with her head on my lap and I sniff her hair/head it doesn't smell good...not bad b/c it is clean but just not that just shampooed fresh smell, yk? Am I making any sense, lol. My other dd has people telling her how beautiful her hair smells and they use the same shampoo and conditioner every day. My older dd is 15-do you think it's hormones? Any ideas appreciated:)

Finding the right combo of products does take a bit of work. From the research I've done, the straighter your hair is naturally the more often you'll find yourself needing to wash with a shampoo of some kind. The trick is to find ones without sulfates to be gentle. I use the shampoo bars from Chagrin Valley Farm (love the Summer Sunshine one), but I've also tried that new shampoo from L'Oreal too and I love the tea tree tingle shampoo from Trader Joes. I have to use it about once a week, and I apple cider rinse about once a week to help get rid of any build up.

I just wanted to add that I have been co-washing for about a month now. I was skeptical at first, but I have to say my hair never felt greasy or unclean. However, I may have to stop doing it.

My hair has always been on thin side. It is somewhat wavy, but not curly. I tried the co-washing as I heard the lack of detergents and the vigorus washing helps the hair grow. I think that is true, my hair has grown longer than it usually does in a month, but I am losing so much hair it is ridiculous. I know the vigorus washing (friction is what is doing alot of the cleaning) is causing my hair to come out. I know we lose about 100 hairs a day, but this is way more than that. When I say vigorus washing I am just scrubbing or massaging my scalp more than I normally do, not with my nails or anything.

I cannot go on losing my hair this way. If I do not scrub well, my hair just does not feel like it want it to - just feels a little heavier. My DD has shown me a website for "Lush" products. Kind of expensive, but they have a shampoo bar that looks interesting. These are supposed to be natural products, I might try that and see how I do. :confused3

I have to disagree, my hair never felt clean with Wen. I used it for about 5 months until my boss finally asked me to do something because my hair looked unprofessional and asked if I was starting menopause early. I used the directions and it still turned out looking dirty and feeling dirty. My sister and neice also had the same issue.

I had this same problem. Major waste of money. They also tried to automatically charge me after 30 days for another month's supply, and got angry when it wouldn't go through (I use ShopSafe).

I wash every 3rd or 4th day. Just depends. Sometimes longer, sometimes shorter.

I actually am not a big *anti-sulfate* person. With as little as we use it, I don't see it causing much damage. That's just me, though.

How hard are you scrubbing??? I mean, don't go banana's!!! Especially when its just water in your hair. Nothing is lubricating, as youre scrubbing! You might just be breaking your hair off.

A really, really, really good rinse, (rinse, rinse, rinse, rinse before the conditione) should be good enough, with a nice moving around of your hair on your scalp - and then a rinse, rinse, rinse of all the conditioner, to get it out.

I can't see that just co-washing could cause hair to fall out - KWIM?

I'm glad co-washing is working for so many of you guys. It's *sooooo* much better for your hair. :goodvibes

What deep conditioner and styling products do you recommend for cowashing?

I picked up the Suave Apple for daily use, but I'm used to nicer conditioners. The problem is, dimethicone is a main ingredient in my deep conditioner. As I looked through my products to see what I could use while I'm trying this cowashing thing, I discovered that just about every product I used had a 'cone ingredient in it. No wonder my hair was so flat! So, I'm searching for a good deep conditioner and for some styling products. I blowdry with a big round brush and flat iron for a bit of definition. I have nearly straight hair with a few cowlicks and random curves. TIA! I'm so glad I found this thread!

You shouldn't need a deep conditioner with co washing. Just ask the people who had greasy hair complaints. :lmao:

I use the Wen styling cream. Not sure if there is a budget alternative.

I too am Miss Greasy Hair!! I have friends who can go DAYS between shampoos but I am like you, if I shower at night I have to shower again in the AM. Was verrrrrry skeptical of co-washing. Gave it a try. Loooooove it!!! The first week, just stick with it. It didn't look greasy but my scalp was GRUMPY!! It "thought" it was itchy and dry (hahahaha!) so that took some getting used to.

Every Saturday I mix a couple of tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in 4 cups, dump it on my head, scrub it in, let set for 5 minutes, rinse, then do the whole conditioner wash afterwards, helps to keep it feeling clean. I am now able to go over 24 hours without co-washing! I can go about 32 hours before it starts to look not greasy, but not super clean and I usually just wait until 48 hours.

Also, I don't use any hair products of any kind. The one time I blowdried and then flatironed, my hair felt soooo weird, like gunky. Let it cool from the flatiron, brushed it and then it felt nice and soft, with no frizzies (I ALWAYS get the frizzies and have to use some kind of product after flatironing, new fave was Citre Shine, but this time I didn't have to. NIIIIICE!)

So, give it a try. Stick it out. Give it a month. If it doesn't look clean, maybe not scrubbing and/or leaving conditioner on long enuf?

I do not scrub really, more massaging. There are really no "directions" on how to co-wash, but I found some videos on youtube that I kind of went by. These were mainly for women of color (which I am not) or women with really curly hair (which I do not have). So I did not leave the conditioner on as long as they did and did not "wash" as long as they did. Some videos stated to "wash" for 5 minutes - scrubbing.

You may be right, I might be breaking my hair off by massaging it the way I was. However, my hairstylist has always told me to massage my scalp to promote growth while washing. It has grown faster this month than it usually does.

I may just wash as normal and co-wash a couple days a week and see how it goes. :confused3

Poor thing - that is not fun. I've been at it for just over a month and I seem to be losing less hair (!!) 2 months ago I sounded like you - losing WELL over 100 hairs a day. I was SO stressed about it - thinking, like you, that soon I wouldnt have any hair. I told my coworker and she had had the same problem and suggested a couple of things. 1. Wash your hair w/ the coldest water that you can stand - esp. at the beginning. (The cold water 'tightens' the hair shaft, supposedly, and helps to 'hold' in the hair during the wash time when its more suseptible to being pulled out.) 2. Rub in a nice leave-in conditioner to your scalp every few days - after its dry but as long before your next wash as possible. I found these both helped a lot - but especially using cold water for a pre-rinse before touching my hair - HUGE impact. (I then use the coolest water I can stand for the wash and back to a cold rinse at the end). Agian, HUGE improvement.

Now, adding in the cowashing started last month - even better - my hair loss is probably down to 10-20 a day (down from maybe...150-200????!) So, if the cowashing is no good maybe try the other things??? Good luck.
